So, I discovered this dumping site last week along the road leading to one of my farms. The heaps of sand, dirt, gravel, stones, concrete and coal tar came from different roads and places being renovated by road construction engineers from different places at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. They scrap off the top soil together with the remains of coal tar, concrete and stones from the old road and dump it here. As I looked at it last two weeks, I knew the dump is fertile. I thought about the best crop to cultivate here, there was none because the cultivation will be impossible because of the heavy stones, nylons, concrete and other impediments. Then I decided to go for a crop that you don't even need to cultivate the soil before you plant. That was how I came to the conclusion to plant corn here. This method is called zero tillage in farming. No stress, just plant.
Today, I came to replant and the germinated corns are just doing wonderfully well. By next week, we will add fertilizer to augment growth.
Just stay tuned. I will be updating you on the development.
The issue of farm land availablity is one of the biggest challenges I have faced since I started farming around this Nsukka in Enugu state. Land is not just scarce here but also very costly especially when you are looking for a farmland. Because of this, my farms are fragmented but then I am taking the advantage of exploring different markets for selling of my farm produce. So, even though land is a challenge, it should be an excuse for anybody that wants to go into farming. Just be determined about it and you will see your self doing the little you can and still be progressing.
Good morning my helpers!
