Seriki Williams Abass' Brazilian Barracoon

In the heart of Badagry, Lagos State, stands one of Nigeria's most significant reminders of the transatlantic trade in enslaved people—the Brazilian Barracoon of Seriki Williams Abass. Its weathered walls stand as a silent witness to a painful chapter in human history.

Built in the 1840s, the barracoon served as a holding facility where captured Africans were confined in small, overcrowded cells while awaiting transport across the Atlantic Ocean. Men, women, and children endured harsh conditions, separated from their families and deprived of their freedom.

The barracoon belonged to Seriki Williams Abass, a man who had been taken from Africa to Brazil as a child. After gaining his freedom, he returned to West Africa, settled in Badagry, and became one of the region's most influential figures in the trade. His life reflects the complex and deeply painful realities of that era.

Today, the Brazilian Barracoon has been preserved as the Seriki Williams Abass Museum. Inside, visitors can see original chains, shackles, historical artifacts, and documents that reveal the realities of the transatlantic trade in enslaved people.

More than a historical monument, the Brazilian Barracoon stands as a place of remembrance, education, and reflection. It reminds the world of the resilience of those who suffered, the importance of preserving history, and the enduring message that such atrocities must never be repeated.
