Why Lapping Reinforcement at the Column Face is a Structural "No-Go"
As a structural engineer, one of the most common site errors I see is the improper placement of lap splices specifically, lapping top reinforcement directly at the face of a column. While it might seem convenient for the ironworkers, it’s a major red flag for the building’s integrity.
Here’s the technical "why" behind the rule:
1. The Peak Stress Zone (Hogging Moments)
In structural design, the area where a beam meets a column is a zone of maximum negative moment (hogging). Imagine a clothesline: the most tension and "pull" occur right at the anchor points. In a building, the top of the beam is being pulled apart with maximum force at the support. Lapping bars here introduces a point of weakness exactly where the demand is highest.
2. Shear Stress & "Punching" Risk
The column acts as a concentrated point of resistance. If you lap bars at this interface, you increase the congestion of the steel, often preventing proper concrete vibration. This leads to honeycombing and a reduced bond between steel and concrete, making the beam susceptible to shear failure essentially allowing the support to "pierce" through the beam.
3. The "Snap" Factor
A lap splice relies on the transfer of stress through the surrounding concrete. In a high-tension zone, the concrete is already prone to cracking. If the bond fails, the reinforcement loses continuity, and the beam can "snap" at the support, leading to potential progressive collapse.
The Engineer’s Solution:
Follow the 1/3 or 1/4 Rule: Always shift your top reinforcement laps toward the mid-span (the zone of least tension for top bars).
Clear the Support: Ensure the lap starts well away from the column face to allow the solid, continuous bars to handle the peak hogging moments.
Prioritize Bond: Proper spacing and positioning ensure the concrete can grip the steel effectively, allowing the structure to "breathe" under load without failing.

Engineering Tip: A structure is only as strong as its weakest connection. Don't let a poorly placed lap be the reason for a structural failure.

Internship in Engineering: The Foundation Many Are Ignoring

One of the most critical yet undervalued phases in the journey of an engineer particularly in the construction and built environment is the internship stage (SIWES/IT).

It is during this period that theory meets reality.

Classrooms will teach you design principles, formulas, and standards. But the construction site introduces you to something entirely different uncertainty, coordination challenges, material behavior, human factors, and real-time decision-making. These are things no textbook can fully capture.

Yet, there is a growing trend among fresh graduates to approach internship with the wrong mindset.

Many see it as a paid engagement rather than a learning platform. The focus quickly shifts to allowance, convenience, and working conditions, instead of exposure, skill acquisition, and professional growth.

This is a fundamental error.

Internship is not primarily about what you earn it is about what you become.

The construction industry, by its nature, is practical. It demands hands-on understanding. You cannot effectively supervise concrete works if you have never witnessed a pour from start to finish. You cannot manage reinforcement placement if you have never been on site during fixing. You cannot lead teams if you have never observed how site dynamics truly operate.

Internship is where you build this foundation.

It is where you learn:
• How drawings translate into physical structures
• How site challenges are solved in real time
• How to communicate with artisans, supervisors, and clients
• How to manage time, pressure, and expectations

These are the competencies that differentiate an average graduate from a valuable professional.

From personal experience, the conditions are rarely convenient. There may be long distances, minimal allowances, and physically demanding environments. But these are not setbacks they are part of the formation process.

The engineers who stand out are not necessarily the most brilliant academically; they are the ones who embraced the process early, exposed themselves to real work, and developed practical intelligence alongside theoretical knowledge.

Today, the industry is highly competitive. Thousands of graduates enter the market yearly, but only a few are truly job-ready. Employers are not just looking for certificates they are looking for competence.

And competence is built, not assumed.

Let it be clear: opportunities exist within this field. There are professionals within a few years of experience earning significantly and handling major responsibilities. The difference lies in how early and how well they positioned themselves.

Your trajectory in this profession will depend on:
• The level of practical exposure you gain early
• Your willingness to learn beyond comfort
• Your ability to convert experience into skill

If you choose a career in construction and the built environment, then you must embrace the process fully. Internship is not a formality it is your foundation.

Ignore it, and you weaken your future.

Why Engineering Standards Are Non-Negotiable

I recently came across a video where a local contractor claimed that standard engineering concrete mix ratios are impractical or ineffective.

This is a dangerous misconception one that poses a significant risk to property owners who may not fully grasp the technical requirements of structural integrity.

To be clear:
This is not an indictment of the craftsmanship of local builders.

Hands-on experience is an invaluable asset on any site. However, practical experience is not a substitute for structural engineering science.

The Reality of Concrete Mix Ratios
Ratios such as 1:2:4 or other higher mix ratio are not mere suggestions; they are calculated proportions designed to achieve specific compressive strengths.

When strictly adhered to, these standards ensure:

*Predictable Structural Performance: Beams, slabs, and columns behave exactly as designed under load.

*Enhanced Durability: Increased resistance to environmental weathering and chemical degradation.

*Mitigation of Cracking: Controlled shrinkage and thermal expansion.
* Investment Protection: Long-term peace of mind that the structure is built to last.

The Hidden Costs of "On-Site Adjustments"
Structural integrity is compromised the moment standardized ratios are ignored in favor of "intuition." Common site errors include:

* Excessive Water-Cement Ratios: Adding water to improve workability significantly reduces the final strength of the concrete.

* Inconsistent Batching: Estimating proportions by "eye" leads to structural weak points.

* Ignoring Material Quality: Using unwashed sand or poorly graded aggregates distorts the design mix.

Crucial Note:
Concrete rarely fails the moment the formwork is removed. It weakens silently, only revealing its flaws when subjected to peak loads, vibrations, or the passage of time.

Experience is valuable, but concrete obeys the laws of physics, not the confidence of the contractor.

If you are currently developing a property, do not accept the phrase,

"This is how we’ve always done it."

* Ask Questions: Understand the specific mix designs being used for different structural elements.

* Demand Precision: Ensure your team uses standardized measuring tools (gauge boxes) rather than shovels.

* Insist on Supervision: Professional engineering oversight is the only way to guarantee compliance.

Staircase Setting Out: Why Attention to Detail Matters

As a builder, one of the components that demands precision and extra care is the staircase.

It's not just a means of moving between floors; it's a major element of safety, comfort, and design flow.

Unfortunately, in many buildings, stair halls are so narrow that even two people cannot walk side by side. This, combined with irregular risers and treads, creates discomfort and potential hazards for users.

One of the best ways to ensure a smooth and user-friendly staircase is by properly calculating the number of steps (risers) required from floor to floor before construction begins.

Professional Best Practices for Stair Riser Calculation.

Measure the Total Floor-to-Floor Height
Start by taking the full vertical measurement from the finished floor below to the finished floor above.

Divide to Determine Equal Risers.

Divide the total height by a riser height within the acceptable range (typically 145mm–175mm) to determine the number of risers. Round this to the nearest whole number, then recalculate the exact uniform riser height.

Maintain Uniformity.

All risers must be equal. Avoid situations where 19 risers are at 150mm and 1 or 2 risers end up at 175mm or 120mm. This inconsistency is a major safety concern and a sign of poor craftsmanship.

Don't start with Short First Steps.

Starting with a shorter base riser can disrupt the entire flight. It also affects your floor screeding level and may cause misalignment with landings.

Standards to remember.

Minimum Riser Height: 145mm
Maximum Riser Height: 175mm
Recommended Range for Comfort: 145mm to 155mm

Risers above 175mm or below 145mm create strain for users and increase the risk of accidents especially for children, the elderly, or in public-use buildings.

Final Thought
Whether you're working on a home, office, or public space, the staircase should be approached with the same level of attention as the foundation and other element in the building. A well-laid staircase is not just a feature — it’s a statement of safety and skill.
