Update šŸ”„

The stories selected for the Longlist are among the best we have ever seen. And we would like to get your views on them.

The Burst Stories community is made up of creative people: writers, philosophers, visual artists, singers, songwriters, performers, readers, poets, designers, etc. Whoever you are, as long as you follow this page, we value your perspective and want you to have your say in the Dele-Balogun Prize for Flash Fiction.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: From today until December 31st, a batch of stories from the Longlist will be shared here every day at 6:00 PM WAT.

Step 2: To see each batch as soon as it drops, head to our profile, tap the bell icon, and turn on post notifications (select All Posts).

Step 3: The voting link will be in our bio. Click it to react to every story by giving it a rating. Five stars is the highest rating you can give, and one star is the lowest.

Your ratings will be considered during the selection of the Shortlist.

To ensure a fair process, the page will be locked to prevent abuse. Only those following this page by 6:00 PM WAT each day will have their ratings counted.

Thank you.

*To address the issue of popularity contest, we will like to state clearly that the committee (not the public) selected the stories that made the longlist based on merit, and they (not the public) will also select the eventual winner from the shortlist based on merit (not on who gets the highest votes). We didn’t want the committee to be the sole decider of what a good story should be; that’s why we are opening it up to get your perspective. Rest assured that there’s no way a story without merit will win solely based on public voting.

A quick update šŸ”„

We’ve now read every single story submitted, at least twice. To navigate the incredible volume of entries for The Dele-Balogun Prize, each story was carefully evaluated using four key criteria:

Stopping power: Did it make us pause?
Originality: Did it feel fresh?
Suspense: Did it hold our attention?
Vivid description: Could we see, feel, and live inside the world created?

Based on this, stories were colour-coded as follows:

🟢 Green: Stories that met our judging criteria.
🟠 Amber: Stories that met some of the criteria.
āšŖļø White: Stories that didn’t align with the criteria .

Our longlist was drawn from the Green stories. Even though we expanded the longlist to include as many works as possible, so many wonderful stories still couldn’t make it.

That’s why we want to say clearly: Not making the list is not a reflection of your talent. Every writer brought something meaningful, and we’re truly grateful.

So, what happens next?

We’ll soon begin sharing the longlisted stories in batches here on this page. And that’s where you come in, readers and followers of this page. We will like the Burn Stories community to have their say and vote on the stories that should make the shortlist. From that shortlist, the committee will choose the final winner.

Longlist batches will be shared daily at 6:00 PM WAT from December 26th to 31st

To see each batch as soon as it drops, head to our profile, tap the bell icon, and turn on post notifications (select All Posts) so you see every batch the moment it drops.

Lastly, wish we could give personalized feedback to every writer, but with so many entries, that’s just not possible. Instead, we’ll host a general feedback workshop using selected stories as case studies so we can all learn and grow together

Thank you again for sharing your words and world with us šŸ™

Thank you for honouring us with your entry for The Dele Balogun Prize for Flash Fiction.

You have already won simply by picking up your pen and daring to write. You have created something that would not exist if you had not brought it into the world.

Our team is now beginning the careful process of reading all 1,565 submissions. Rest assured, every single story will be read.

For now, please turn on notifications(All posts) for this page so you never miss an update.
