The Incredible Story Behind the Messi–Lamine Yamal Photos

For years, people have wondered how a five-month-old baby from an ordinary working-class family, with no football connections, ended up in a photoshoot with Lionel Messi.

The truth is remarkably simple: it was pure chance.

In late 2007, Spanish newspaper Sport, in partnership with UNICEF, organized a charity calendar featuring Barcelona players posing with babies. Lamine Yamal's parents entered him into a public raffle, and he was randomly selected.

By coincidence, Lionel Messi—then a shy 20-year-old beginning his rise to stardom—was assigned to the photoshoot.

At Camp Nou, photographer Joan Monfort captured a series of heartwarming images of Messi gently holding and bathing baby Lamine while his mother looked on. At the time, it was just another charity event. No one could have imagined that the baby in Messi's arms would one day play for Barcelona, inherit the legendary No. 10 shirt, and become one of football's brightest stars.

The photographs faded into obscurity for years, only resurfacing after Yamal's meteoric rise in football.

Now, nearly two decades later, fate has written an extraordinary chapter. The anonymous baby from that charity photoshoot and the young footballer who held him are set to captain the hopes of Spain and Argentina as they face each other in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

No famous family. No special connections. Just a public raffle, a charity photoshoot, and a coincidence that has become one of football's most remarkable stories.
