Let me explain this image illustration called the 180-Degree Rule.

1. The Invisible Line

Look at the top picture. Do you see the dashed line running through the two people? In the film making world, this is called the "Axis of Action." Imagine an invisible fence connecting the noses of the two people talking.

2. Picking a Side

The rule states that the camera crew must pick one side of that fence and stay there. In this diagram, they chose the "bottom" side. You can see cameras A, B, and C are all positioned in a semi-circle on that side of the line. They never cross over to the "top" side.

3. Why do they do this?

Look at the bottom row of screens (A, B, and C).

Screen A: The guy on the right is looking toward the left.

Screen C: The guy on the left is looking toward the right.

Because the cameras stayed on one side, the two characters look like they are facing each other. If the editor cuts back and forth between Camera A and Camera C, their eyes will meet.

What happens if you break the rule?

If you were to move Camera A to the other side of the dashed line, the guy on the screen would suddenly flip directions. Both men would appear to be looking in the same direction (e.g., both looking right), and the audience would get confused. It would look like they were sitting behind one another rather than talking face-to-face.

Summary

This diagram shows how camera operators ensure that when you watch a movie, you always know where people are sitting and who they are looking at. It keeps the video consistent so your brain doesn't get confused.
