About me

The dustiest locations on earth are the locations that inspire me the most. Locations that are abandoned, given up and often isolated.

Each with their own story, with their own uninhabited world, waiting to be captured and passed on. That's why I travel all over the world, under the name of Baksteen. My own name is Levaronne Lourens and I am a photographer from The Netherlands. Historical and architectural remains are what I prefer to photograph. What is an old, dilapidated building for some, is the scene of a wild spectacle for

me. How magnificent is it to see how nature completely takes over a building and ensures that it can take back its own place. I want to capture these scenes and pass it on with love to ensure that no one misses its beauty. My website is the place where I have put all these pictures together.

The Great Synagogue, Romania 🇷🇴 (2021)

This Great Synagogue was built in the 18th century to unite both Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities. Its interior reflected elements of both traditions, creating a unique blend of styles with ornate arches, colorful ceilings, and beautiful stained glass.

After World War II the synagogue was no longer in use. Over the decades it fell into disrepair, its roof collapsing, its treasures looted, and its once vibrant halls left in silence. In the 1980s there were even attempts to transform the building into a theater because of its excellent acoustics, but these plans never came to life.

Spooky season has arrived and boy does this location fit right in. These sculptures of men, giants and monsters have a terrifying feel to them. They bring you shivers even if you’re not spooked easily. It truly is a marvellous site to visit. You can feel the tragic reason why they’ve been created hovering around them and you can notice the sculptures are intentionally created to shock. I bet the first people visiting this garden in the 16th century were truly awed and shocked by these magnificent pieces! Nature has made these sculptures even more beautiful over the years and it was a real pleasure visiting these masterpieces.
