In the heart of Antwerp, Belgium, stands the historic Quinten Matsys Well, lovingly called Putkevie by the locals. During the Middle Ages, when Antwerp was one of Europe’s busiest trading cities, this well served as an important source of water and a gathering place for merchants, sailors, and townspeople.

Around 1490, the well’s beautiful Gothic iron structure was created by a young blacksmith named Quinten Matsys. Legend says he fell in love with Catharina Heyns, the daughter of a painter. Her father refused to let her marry a mere blacksmith, so Quinten abandoned his forge and devoted himself to painting. Through hard work and talent, he became one of Europe’s greatest painters. An inscription on the well still recalls this story:

“Love made a blacksmith into a painter.”

At the very top of the well stands a small statue of the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo, linked to the legendary origin of Antwerp’s name. According to folklore, a giant named Druon Antigoon terrorized sailors on the River Scheldt, cutting off the hands of those who refused to pay tolls. Brabo defeated the giant, cut off his hand, and threw it into the river. It is believed that the name Antwerp came from the Dutch words “hand werpen,” meaning “to throw a hand.”

Today, the Quinten Matsys Well remains a timeless symbol of Antwerp’s history, art, love, and legend.

Walking along the old streets of Antwerp in Belgium, my eyes were suddenly drawn to a silent piece of history standing quietly among the narrow medieval lanes. From the outside, it looked like a small Gothic chapel, but hidden within its aged bricks was a story of humanity that had endured for more than six centuries.

In the early fifteenth century, around 1400 to 1405, a wealthy widow named Elisabeth Hays and her associate, Boudewijn de Ridder, founded this remarkable place. At that time, life for poor and helpless elderly people in Europe’s growing cities was painfully difficult. Moved by compassion, they decided to create a safe refuge for neglected elderly women. They named it Sint-Annagodshuis
— a house of mercy dedicated to Saint Anne.

Six poor elderly women once lived here. They were given small rooms to stay in, food to eat, a modest allowance, and access to religious care. Though surrounded by the noise and bustle of the city, the inner courtyard remained peaceful and serene, like a tiny world of its own.

The tall arched window at the front of the building is a beautiful example of medieval Gothic architecture. Its pointed arches and delicate stone carvings still reflect the artistic spirit of that era. Later, in the seventeenth century, the entrance below was redesigned in the Baroque style. Heavy stone decorations, curling ornaments, and dramatic details gave the building an even more majestic appearance.

As centuries passed, the purpose of the building changed many times. At different periods, it served as a place for religious teaching, an artist’s workshop, a book storage house, and even a small shop. Yet somehow, its old soul never disappeared.

In the nineteenth century, the building was restored. Although the surrounding residential sections were redesigned, great care was taken to preserve the medieval character of the original chapel. The last resident lived here until 1963. After that, the building quietly became part of history itself.

Even today, it still stands silently on Antwerp’s Old Street. Its weathered bricks seem to carry the echoes of countless lives — stories of laughter and sorrow, prayers and survival. Once a shelter for vulnerable women, it is now a place where people come to feel the beauty of history.

sint-Annagodshuis is not merely an old building. It is a living memory of humanity, compassion, and the long journey of time.

Arbeid Vrijheid or The Sculpture of Labour and Freedom.

The “Bouwdrager” sculpture was inaugurated on September 4, 1950. It portrays an idealized worker figure — a strong, muscular dock labourer dressed in body-fitted work clothes, with the special head covering traditionally used for carrying heavy sacks. With confidence and an almost defiant expression, he gazes toward the River Scheldt.

Originally, the artist Meunier created this dockworker as a symbol of the awakening and rising spirit of the working class. However, after World War II, the statue gained a deeper meaning. It became a tribute to the dock labourers who continued working courageously despite the terror of flying bombs, and thus evolved into a symbol of resistance, bravery, and regained freedom.

Even today, standing proudly at the Grote Markt in Antwerp, Belgium, this 1950 sculpture remains a silent witness to history. It is not merely a statue of a dockworker, but a memorial honoring the unwavering spirit of labourers during the resistance of 1944–1945, while also preserving the memory of the archaeological excavations in the area.
