7 places in KYOTO that I visited (and fell in love with…)
(1) Fushimi Inari Shrine
While crowded at the front, Fushimi Inari became peaceful and almost zen when we reached the deeper parts where most tourists don’t visit. The 1000 vibrant orange Tori gates that covers the 4 km stretch proved to be an amazing sight to first time visitors to Kyoto.
To avoid crowds, you could come here during off-peak seasons or during the early morning/evening hours. Definitely explore the hidden trails along the entire area!
(2) Maruyama Park
During spring, you’ll find that Maruyama Park would be covered in HUNDREDS of Sakura trees. Never had I ever seen a place as beautiful as this park! The park is most notable for the Weeping Cherry Tree that stands in the centre of the park and towers over the entire area. Once in full bloom, this park becomes almost like heaven on earth.
Tip for visitors - you can find the hanami festival in full force here every spring season. Stores from around Kyoto would open here and you could chill with your friends/family while eating local delights and drinking some solid Japanese alcohol!
It gets pretty crowded so you guys gotta be quick!
(3) Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Visitors would often find that the bamboo grove was a little tiny, but there’s still quite a fair bit to explore around the area!
For starters, there is a zen garden located along the entrance of the bamboo grove. You can find different species of plants / flowers blooming here through the seasons. Do note that you have to pay a small entrance fee here in cash!
There is also more places explore nearby - such as the Togetsukyo Bridge, Monkey Park, and more food places nearby like %Arabica Arashiyama Kyoto! In fact, one of the things I enjoyed most here was renting a row boat for an hour for about 20,000 yen! Totally worth it even if you’re solo!
(4) The Philosopher’s Path
A “hidden gem” in Kyoto. This is a 2 kilometre long canal that is popularly known for its scenic views. Sakura trees that “shelter” the canal while the delicate petals fall gently into the waters. This is a lovely place to walk along if you do want to hide away from the crowd.
