Nature Behind the Art

"Lightning at Lovund"

Lovund is a small island on the Helgeland coast in northern Norway, surrounded by the Norwegian Sea, small islands and mountains.

On this evening, dark clouds covered parts of the sky, while the horizon around Lovund was still clear. Then, suddenly, lightning struck over the sea.

Moments like this are difficult to plan. The light, the weather and the lightning came together for only a few seconds - and then the scene was gone.

Did you know? Lightning can strike more than 15 kilometres away from a thunderstorm - far from where the rain is falling. In rare cases, it can strike more than 40 kilometres away.

Nature Behind the Art

"The Home of the Wild Reindeer"

Wild reindeer have travelled through the mountains of Jotunheimen for generations, moving between different grazing and calving areas throughout the year.

The old map of western Jotunheimen is an important part of this artwork. Using my Projectography technique, I combined the map with a photograph of a wild reindeer, connecting the animal with the landscape it has moved through for generations.

The smooth rocks along Norway's coast have been shaped over millions of years.

During many ice ages, huge glaciers moved across the landscape. The ice slowly shaped and polished the rock, creating the smooth surfaces, lines and small channels we can still see today.

Sea or mountains. Which do you prefer?

Even a small crack in the rock can become a place for plants to grow.

Soil, water and organic material collect between the rocks, creating small pockets where plants can take root. The cracks can also provide some shelter from the wind and help retain moisture.

Sometimes, a crack in the rock is all a plant needs.

The sun may have disappeared below the horizon, but the colour can remain.

Around sunset, sunlight travels through more of the atmosphere. More of the blue light is scattered away, leaving the light richer in red and orange. Even after sunset, clouds higher in the sky can still catch this sunlight and glow above the darker landscape.

For a photographer, this can be one of the most interesting times to watch the sky. The colours can change from minute to minute, even after the sun is gone.

Water has shaped the Norwegian landscape for thousands of years. This waterfall can be found along the historic King's Road at Filefjell, where nature and history meet.

The glaciers gives beautiful contrasts to the surrounding landscapes. "Leirbreen" in Jotunheimen is now exhibited at Sognefjellshytta.
