Kumari Puja at Basantapur (Kathmandu Durbar Square) is a special and sacred cultural tradition of the Newar community. It takes place in the Kumari Ghar (Kumari’s residence), where the living goddess Kumari—a young prepubescent girl believed to be the earthly manifestation of Goddess Taleju—is worshipped.
Small girls are often dressed like Kumari themselves and worshipped as a form of divine energy (Devi).
