I Tested My AI Digital Twin's Voice (No Avatar Needed)

This isn't an AI avatar. It's my AI digital twin's voice, layered over footage of me testing lighting, backdrops and camera setups for clients.

If you've never used AI in your content, this is the easiest place to start: clone your own voice and use it over footage you already have.

I test setups like this every month so what I offer clients has been tested, not only researched.

You write the script. You know your subject. It's delivered in a cloned voice that's genuinely yours, no face on screen yet. It's a smaller first step, and a good way to learn how AI content works before going further.

Your face still matters, that's not changing. But faceless AI content is holding its own in the data. 30% of top performing videos have no face in them, and it converts 161% higher than polished video, at 60 to 80% lower cost.

We got this from Corina on Google, and it has stuck with me since.

Corina deals with migraines, and being under bright lights to film regularly is not always possible for her. That is the real reason a lot of people quietly stop showing up on video, even when they have something worth saying.

𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼-𝘁𝗼-𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁. 𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆.

The promise sounds great: upload a photo, get a talking video. Fast, cheap, no camera required.

But in practice the lip sync still does not look right. And when a video looks off, it reflects on your brand — not on the tool.

The technology is improving fast. I will keep testing. But right now there is only one approach I would trust for client-facing content: a well-filmed digital twin using HeyGen for video and ElevenLabs for voice.

That combination lets you produce videos that speak in your voice, switch between portrait and landscape, update the script, and change the background — without going back on camera.

If you are thinking about using video avatars for your business, I would hold off on the quick fixes for now.

Why does this matter? Avatar 3 is the only unlimited avatar in HeyGen. It has no cap on monthly video generation. For businesses producing content at volume, that is the most cost-effective option on the platform by a significant margin.

What to do right now: log in and confirm your twin is still there. Keep your account active. Make sure billing is current. Do not cancel and re-subscribe to save money short term. You will lose the avatar permanently.

If you are already on Avatar 4, you are in good shape. It is the current standard and actively improved. What matters most is that you have found the right fit and are using it consistently.

Platform updates are part of working with AI tools professionally. This one is worth acting on today.

𝗛𝗲𝘆𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆.
Not every avatar version suits every person. Here is what I have found.

Avatar 5 is the most expressive version yet. If you are naturally animated on camera, it can look great. But if you are more reserved, it may feel a bit much.

Avatar 4 is still what I recommend for most of my clients. It is reliable, natural-looking, and works across a wide range of communication styles.

Avatar 3 is being discontinued. If you already have a digital twin built on Avatar 3, you will keep access. New twins going forward will not be built on it.

One filming tip: if your hands move wide when you talk, keep your twin on its original background rather than removing it. Avatar 5's expressiveness combined with a cut-out background can blur your hands at the edges. The original background keeps everything sharp.

I am also still using ElevenLabs for voice rather than HeyGen's built-in tool. The gap is closing, but I am not ready to switch yet.
