It's a funny old thing being a portrait photographer. On one hand, what a privilege it is to be entrusted with family memories - how incredible to be one of the first people to meet a new little human, to capture a family's bond, a toddler's personality, one of baby's first smiles or siblings' first cuddles.
On the other hand, it can be so hard pouring your heart into your wee business, navigating pricing and profitability, an increasingly competitive market, always working to learn and improve your skills, while balancing work and family - always difficult, but nearly impossible when you work from home!

A couple of years ago it all got too much and I burnt out and decided to take a break from photography to concentrate on other areas of my life. Now my kids are a little bit older, life is a bit calmer and I would love to dip my toes back into the world of photography. I've enjoyed a dig through the archives looking at some old favourites

My favourite message to receive at the moment goes something like 'My family are FINALLY visiting from overseas, we haven't seen each other for 3 years, could you take some photos for us while we're all together?' - the answer is YES! If there's anything these last few crazy years have taught us it's got to be the importance of time with our loved ones.
I loved capturing this family at the beautiful, if slightly chilly, Ocean View beach. How special are family photos?! Whether you hire a pro or crank out your iPhone, make sure you take lots of them xx
