It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to Tom Martin who passed away in Hamilton yesterday. A wonderful photographer, teacher, and mentor who made a lasting difference in my life.
Tom taught me so much about photography—not just the technical side of taking a photograph, but how to really see. His knowledge, patience, and enthusiasm inspired me to look at the world differently and to keep learning and growing as a photographer.
When Tom decided to retire from tutoring, he did something that meant a great deal to me. He recommended that I take his place. It was a wonderful vote of confidence, and one that I will always be grateful for. In many ways, taking on that role felt like carrying forward a small part of what Tom had given me.
I will always remember Tom with great affection and gratitude. His influence will live on through the photographers he taught, the knowledge he shared, and the passion for photography that he helped nurture in others.
Thank you, Tom, for your guidance, your encouragement, and for believing in me. You will be greatly missed, but your legacy will continue through all those you inspired.
