🌌 One of my favourite aurora photos I’ve ever captured β€” but it wasn’t taken during the huge aurora events of 2024.

This was actually captured at 2:45am on 27 March 2025, on a night when I wasn’t expecting anything particularly spectacular.

Most of the night had just been a diffuse auroral glow, but later in the night it suddenly came alive with this brief burst. I’d scouted this location previously and had been waiting for the right opportunity to photograph the aurora from here β€” and thankfully I decided to stay out a little longer that night!

This is a newly re-edited version of the photo. Nothing has been added or artificially created β€” I’ve simply gone back to the original files and brought out the colour and detail that was already captured by the camera.

It’s still one of my favourite aurora images I’ve taken. 🌌

What do you think of the new edit?

**Which one would you put on your wall? πŸ‘€**

I’m considering getting some new prints made for the upcoming **Taranaki Arts Trail**, and I’d love your help choosing!

I’ve narrowed it down to these four images β€” three aurora shots and one Moonrise β€” but I’m curious to see which one is the favourite.

**Which would you choose: 1, 2, 3 or 4?**

Let me know in the comments πŸ‘‡

The most popular ones may just end up getting printed for the Arts Trail!

πŸŒ™ **This was the clear favourite β€” and I captured it moving!**

Several days ago I shared my **Top 10 weirdest / most unusual photos**, and this Lunar Halo shot came out as the most popular of them all!

But did you also see the **timelapse** I captured of this incredible phenomenon?

Watching the halo around the Moon rise above the mountain was pretty incredible β€” definitely one of the more unusual things I’ve been lucky enough to capture.

Check out the timelapse below πŸ‘‡

πŸ“… What does 600 calendars actually look like? 😲

Apparently… a pallet load being wheeled into my driveway! πŸ˜‚

I made a short YouTube video showing the arrival and unboxing of this year's calendars. Have a watch below β€” seeing 600 calendars arrive at once was quite a sight! πŸ‘‡

I've also now started the big job of getting the 450 pre-orders sent out. I'm generally working through the oldest orders first, so it's going to take me a little while to get through everyone.

πŸ“§ If you chose FREE New Plymouth pickup, please keep an eye on your email inbox (and spam/junk folder), as email will be my first way of contacting you to arrange collection.

If you're in a hurry to receive your calendar, just message me and I'm happy to bump your order up the queue. Otherwise, there's plenty of time β€” it's only 31 August and these are 2027 calendars, so we're still well ahead of schedule!

⚠️ Quick scam reminder: I won't message you on Facebook asking for extra payment to receive your calendar. The only exception is if you selected free pickup but actually want it posted β€” in that case I'll contact you by email first and we can arrange the additional postage.

Thanks again to everyone who pre-ordered β€” 450 pre-orders is an incredible response! πŸ˜ŠπŸ“…

🌌 My Top 10 Weirdest & Most Unusual Phenomena I’ve Captured!

I went back through my photos from the last few years and picked out 10 of my favourite weird, rare or unusual things I’ve managed to capture on camera.

Some were completely unexpected, while others were moments I was incredibly lucky to be in the right place at the right time for.

πŸ‘‰ Which one is your favourite? Let me know in the comments!

πŸ“· I left my camera at this frozen lake ALL NIGHT to capture Earth's rotation πŸŒπŸŒ€

I've made a new version of my all-night Pouakai Tarns timelapse β€” with more of the night sky, a star-trail sequence, and two of my favourite images from the night at the end. 🌌

This was my first-ever attempt at an all-night winter timelapse in sub-zero temperatures β€” and the first time I've captured the ice actually forming overnight. ❄️

Watch the stars move across the sky as the ice gradually thickens through the night β€” and make sure you see the final few seconds! ⭐

πŸ“· Will my camera survive ALL NIGHT in sub-zero temperatures? πŸ₯Άβ„️

🌌 Make sure you watch right to the end β€” the final part is my favourite!

I left my camera running unattended beside the frozen Pouakai Tarns to capture an entire winter night beneath the stars.

Watch the stars move across the sky and the ice gradually thicken as the temperature drops. ❄️⭐

But things didn't quite go according to plan... 😬

How do you get a drone view where drones are prohibited? πŸ€”

With a 3-metre selfie stick! 😁

I took my Insta360 X5 and 3-metre selfie stick up to the Pouakai Tarns to see just how close I could get to a drone-style perspective β€” without using a drone.

Drones are strictly prohibited at the Pouakai Tarns, but getting the camera 3 metres above my head created some pretty unusual perspectives of the frozen tarns and Mt Taranaki.

And yes... it really was as cold and windy as it sounds! πŸ₯ΆπŸ’¨

πŸŽ‰ 13,000 followers! πŸ“·πŸŒŒ

Another milestone I’m very grateful for β€” I’ve just passed 13k followers here on Facebook! πŸ™

It took me around 5 years to reach my first 5k. Incredibly, in just the last 6 months or so, that number has more than doubled. 🀯

I passed 10k at the end of June, 11k just over a week later, and 12k around a month ago.

It’s also got me wondering lately: does Taranaki love its scenery more than any other part of New Zealand? πŸŒ‹β€οΈ

The Photos of Taranaki Facebook group now has an incredible 89k members! I’ve had a look for comparable photography groups around other parts of NZ, and so far I haven’t found anything that comes close. That seems pretty remarkable for a region our size.

Maybe there’s just something about living under a mountain that makes us particularly proud of where we live! πŸ˜„πŸŒ‹

So to celebrate 13k, here’s another recently finished image from one of my favourite places β€” Pouakai Tarns. πŸ”οΈπŸ“·

Thank you to everyone who follows, likes, comments, shares my work, or simply enjoys seeing this little corner of New Zealand through my camera. ❀️
