My first ever solar timelapse. Taken over an hour and using 100s of gigabytes of data and over 30,000 frames. The prominence seen here is roughly 15 earths tall off the face of the sun. A spectacular sight of dense clouds of plasma suspended and shaped by the powerful magnetic fields. While it looks like flames there’s actually no fire here, it’s just hot, ionized hydrogen and helium gas emitting light. This was imaged using an Lunt Solar Systems 60mm Ha scope with an ToupTek Astro camera mounted on my trusty Sky-watcher Australia star adventurer 2i

Since everyone’s posting their solar eclipse photos and I didn’t travel across the world to shoot it. I thought I’d share mine from 2012. I guess this is my first astro photo. The 86% eclipse. I remember using some welding glass in front of my first camera a Canon ANZ 550d with kit lenses. Quite a surreal experience. Planning is already underway for the 2028 solar eclipse here in New Zealand. With a lot more experience and knowledge in hand!

A shot I’ve been wanting to capture for quite a while but clouds or other things got in the way. But today was the day and within an hour from home as well. With the crystal clear skies and next to no wind I figured it would be a clean pass and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Shot with an Ha solar scope and a planetary camera guided by an star adventura which was perfect for a quick setup on the side of the road.

My full sequence of the Lunar Eclipse. Shot between 9:45pm and 3:45am tracked using my skywatcher star adventure and shot on Canon R5 with my RF 100-500mm and 2x extender to reach 1000mm.

The suns nice and active today with sunspot 4366 center stage. Holding out for a decent CME after all the flaring that’s been going on.

Celestial Cascade

Another one of my favourite photos from last season. The Milky Way stretches across the night sky like a celestial river, flowing down to meet the waterfall as it plunges into the sea. In this fleeting alignment, the heavens mirror the earth — starlight cascading above, water cascading below — bound together in a single moment of harmony.

The Lagoon

A location I had wanted to visit for some time, but either the weather or the Milky Way and moon never aligned at the right moment. The lagoon usually holds little to no water, but after heavy rain I made the trek in to find both the lagoon and the final part of the track flooded — creating stunning mirror-like reflections across the ice-cold water.

A fleeting scene, visible only under perfect conditions and celestial alignment.
