My frogfish camouflaged in sponge was a highly commended in the New Zealand Amateur Photography Awards. The judge's comments were: "I enjoyed the sense of discovery in this image, starting off thinking its coral, and then finding the wee eye and mouth. you have handled the color really well, and how the fish uses that as camouflage. Well done on a very unusual image".

Underwater reproduction: jewel anemones (Corynactis viridis) spawning on the HMNZS Canterbury.

The females release their eggs into the water column, while the males release clouds of s***m in a synchronised broadcast spawning event. The timing is critical—by spawning together, they maximise the chances of successful fertilisation.

Although, as with any good party, there always seems to be one male that's a little too enthusiastic and makes a mess a bit early... 🤦‍♂️😂
