[CHANG'E FLYING TOWARD THE MOON]
🌙Do you know that in Chinese culture, there is a Goddess of the Moon? The story of Chang'e has been passed down through generations by word of mouth, evolving into many different versions.
✨This is the oldest one.
Once upon a time, the Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, had ten sons who transformed themselves into ten suns, scorching the Earth and causing widespread suffering. The Jade Emperor then summoned Hou Yi to save humanity and teach his sons a lesson.
Witnessing the suffering of humankind, Hou Yi was filled with righteous indignation. One by one, he shot down nine of the suns, leaving only one to keep the Earth warm and light.
When the Jade Emperor learned that nine of his sons had been killed, he was furious. As punishment, he banished Hou Yi and his beautiful wife, Chang’e, to Earth, forcing them to live as ordinary humans.
The couple found it miserable to live as humans, and they longed to return to Heaven. Feeling responsible for Chang’e’s fate, Hou Yi decided to journey to the sacred Mount Kunlun, where the Queen Mother of the West resided, to seek her help.
After overcoming many challenges along the way, Hou Yi finally reached her. In gratitude for his heroic deed in saving the Earth, the Queen Mother rewarded him with an elixir of immortality, along with a warning:
⚡️“Drink half, and you shall have everlasting life. Drink it all, and you will ascend to Heaven as an immortal.”
Unwilling to be separated from his beloved wife, Hou Yi decided they would share the elixir in half, so they could live together on Earth.
However, while Hou Yi was resting from his journey, Chang’e could not resist the temptation of immortality. She drank the entire elixir.
Almost instantly, her body became weightless, and she began to float upward against her will. Drifting higher and higher, she eventually arrived at the Moon, where she found herself alone in a silent Moon Palace, accompanied only by a white rabbit. There, she became the Moon Goddess, forever separated from her husband on Earth.
🔍In another version of the tale, Chang’e drank the elixir to prevent it from falling into the hands of a thief. To honor his wife, Hou Yi would place her favorite fruits and cakes in the courtyard as offerings.
🥮This is believed to be one of the origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time of reunion, when families gather to share mooncakes under the full moon.
