Lumi is best known as the home of the endangered Tree Kangaroo, a rare species found in the Torricelli Mountain Range and known in the Olo language as Tenkile.

The district also has a special connection to NRL superstar Alex Johnston, whose grandmother is from the Lumi area, linking one of rugby league's greatest try scorers to the people and culture of this remarkable place.
