Building speaking confidence through a short book talk

A quick book talk can make reading visible and give pupils a simple reason to speak. Invite one pupil to hold up a book they have read and speak for about 30 seconds.

They can share the title, name one character or idea, and explain one reason they would recommend the book. Keep the first talks short and supportive. Classmates can listen, then ask one respectful question.

Sharing simple classroom responsibilities. Audience: PNG primary-school teachers and pupils.

Simple classroom jobs can help pupils care for their learning space and work together. Choose three age-appropriate roles for Monday, such as arranging books, sorting pencils or checking that desks are tidy.

Explain each job clearly, demonstrate it once and provide only the materials needed. Rotate the roles regularly so different learners can participate. Keep every task safe, brief and positive; classroom jobs should never be used as punishment.
Teachers, prepare three simple jobs today and invite pupils to help care for the classroom this week. 🙌

Place value becomes easier when pupils can touch and move the numbers. Give each pair a small collection of clean counters, bottle tops or stones. Ask them to make groups of ten and leave the remaining ones separate.

Then write a two-digit number and let pupils build it, say it and explain how many tens and ones it contains. Move around the class and ask learners to explain their groups to a partner. This simple hands-on routine can support understanding before written practice begins. Save this idea and try it in your next Mathematics lesson. 🔢
