New Ireland Shell Money (Mis)

Mis are a currency composed of hundreds to thousands of thin cut shell discs strung on a fiber strand.

Mis is used not just in financial transactions such as the purchase of food or products like a canoe, but it also has a significant ceremonial and symbolic significance.

It's used for bridal and funerary exchanges, as well as death-related compensatory payments.

Clan leaders were the only ones who could afford mis with an ornate tassel made of a seedpod (usually from a Sapotaceae fruit tree), a shell, or a carved portion of wood meticulously enclosed by a fl**ge of beadwork.
