A Greater Achievement: UOG SRC Cup Launch and PNG RFL Affiliation

From Campus Competition to National Recognition
The launch of the UOG SRC Cup is already a milestone for student leadership under Mr. Justin Muna, SRC President 2025–2026. But the greater achievement is UOG Rugby League Football officially affiliating with the PNG Rugby Football League.

This moves UOG rugby from an internal student tournament to a PNG RFL-recognized pathway. It means UOG players can now be scouted, compete at higher levels, and represent the university on a national stage. That’s not just a tournament that’s a career pathway.

PNG has over 800 language groups, and UOG reflects that diversity. Under the theme Stronger Together. Stronger Future, the SRC Cup and PNG RFL affiliation unites students as one UOG family, instead of separate tribes or faculties. This highlights Unity, Excellence, Partnership, Opportunity and this affiliation delivers on all four. Students now compete for the same jersey, the same badge, and the same dream. Sport becomes the tool that turns diversity into strength.

Dr. Teng Waninga, Vice Chancellor, committing the University of Goroka as a major sponsor, shows this isn’t a one off event. With UOG management, Nmenta, MSD, and Night Fox Security backing it, the SRC Cup now has financial and institutional support. That stability means annual tournaments, better facilities, coaching, and welfare for players. The greater achievement here is sustainability: leadership under Mr. Justin Muna has secured a foundation so future SRCs can build on it, not start from zero.

β€œToday we play. Today we begin.” The first game has been played, but the real win is what comes next. PNG RFL affiliation opens doors for talent identification, scholarships, coaching clinics, and exposure to national selectors. For students from the Highlands and across PNG, UOG is now more than a university it’s a launchpad. The greater achievement is giving every student athlete a clear message: Passion. Pride. Performance. This is your time._

This flyer doesn’t just announce a cup. It announces that UOG students now have a seat at the national rugby table.

UOG SRC Rugby & Basketball Tournament Kick-Off 30/05/2026

Mr. Justin Muna, President of the University of Goroka Students’ Representative Council 2025–2026, officially kicked off the much-anticipated UOG SRC 9s Rugby and Basketball Tournament at Asaroka Lutheran Secondary School. The event marks the start of a new sporting calendar for UOG students, bringing together energy, talent, and school spirit under one banner.

With the ball in hand, President Muna led the ceremonial opening by taking the first kick for the 9s rugby and presenting the basketball for the opening tip-off. His presence on the field and court symbolized hands-on leadership and commitment to student welfare. The moment set the tone for competition that is fierce but fair.

The tournament runs under the theme Fostering Unity and Excellence through Sportsmanship. Through rugby 9s and basketball, UOG students from diverse backgrounds, tribes, and faculties are coming together as one team. The theme reminds players that winning matters, but respect, teamwork, and discipline matter more. Sport becomes the bridge that unites UOG.

Held at Asaroka Lutheran Secondary School, the event also strengthens the bond between the University of Goroka and the wider Goroka community. President Muna encouraged all players and supporters to uphold excellence on and off the field. As the 2025–2026 SRC term begins, this tournament stands as the first step toward building a united, healthy, and competitive student body.
