Popodetta Soccer Revived Through UNRE Initiative
After several years of silence, the Popodetta Soccer Association has been successfully revived, restoring hope and excitement among talented sportsmen, women, and youths in the community.
For a number of years, the absence of organized soccer competitions in Popodetta left many young athletes disengaged, with some drifting into other activities. However, in 2024, students from the PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) Popodetta Campus took the initiative to reignite the passion for soccer in the province.
The students organized a campus-based soccer competition, inviting surrounding communities including Biru CIS, SBS Block, Bango, and other streets within Popodetta Town to participate in the UNRE Oro Soccer Association 2024 tournament.
The main purpose of the competition was to rebuild strong friendships and relationships between students and local communities. Organizers emphasized that sports can play a vital role in promoting unity and positive engagement, particularly in a province that has faced challenges related to law and order.
Over the past two years, soccer has steadily regained its popularity in the area. The renewed interest and strong community participation have led to the successful relaunch of the Popodetta Soccer Association in the heart of Popodetta Town.
Pre-season matches kicked off last week and are expected to continue in the coming weeks, marking a new chapter for organized soccer in the district.
Soccer remains deeply loved in Oro Province. Across communities, it is common to see young people and adults alike playing the game, reflecting its powerful role in bringing people together.
The revival of the association is seen as a positive step toward strengthening community bonds and providing meaningful opportunities for youth engagement through sport.
