Prime Minister Hon. James Marape Announces Major Government Restructure

Port Moresby | 13 July 2026

Prime Minister James Marape has announced a major restructuring of the Papua New Guinea Government to improve performance, accountability, and service delivery.

Key Changes

- Ministers and departmental heads will be reshuffled to improve government performance.

-Finance will be solely responsible for all government payments and warrants.

-Treasury will focus on managing the economy, tax policy, and revenue.

_National Planning will concentrate on national development planning.

_The National Monitoring and Coordination Authority (NMCA) will monitor how public funds are spent.

_State-Owned Enterprises will have simpler reporting structures to improve efficiency.

Prime Minister Marape said the reforms are aimed at creating a more efficient, accountable, and better-performing government ahead of the 2027 National General Election.

MS. TABITHA SUWAE APPOINTED ACTING CHIEF OMBUDSMAN

​Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has announced the appointment of Ms. Tabitha Suwae as Acting Chief Ombudsman of Papua New Guinea.

​Ms. Suwae, who has served as an Ombudsman since October 2024, assumes interim leadership while the substantive position is advertised through an open and competitive recruitment process.

​About Ms. Tabitha Suwae:

​29 Years of Public Service: Brings extensive legal and administrative experience, including 24 years with the Ombudsman Commission and five years with the Office of the Public Prosecutor.

​Proven Leadership:
Previously served as the Commission’s Director of Legal Services before her appointment as an Ombudsman.

​Regional Roots: Proudly represents Manus and West Sepik provinces.
