Former Finance Secretary, Dr Ken Ngangan, has been appointed the inaugural chairman of the new University of Medicine and Health Sciences, with establishing council members including the Secretary of Higher Education, Loni Baki, Health Secretary, Pascoe Kase, UPNG Vice Chancellor Dr Findley and former Customs Commissioner, Ray Paul.

This now grants this new institution a standalone university status, and not part of the University of Papua New Guinea anymore.

These members now have the enormous task of establishing this University and were challenged to establish an institution of excellence that can produce medical practitioners who can practice at the international stage.

The government has allocated K2 billion for infrastructure development, and the new council is now tasked to start work immediately.

THE Government will invest K2 billion in infrastructure for the new Papua New Guinea University of Medicine and Health Sciences (PNGUMHS), Higher Education Minister Kinoka Feo says.

Feo announced the investment during the swearing-in of the university’s interim council, describing it as one of the Government’s largest investments in a higher education institution.

The reported K2 billion investment is a historic opportunity—but success must be measured by the quality of doctors, specialists and researchers we produce, not simply the buildings we construct.

PNG needs quality AND quantity.

We need world-class medical standards, stronger rural medicine, serious research, better clinical training—and experienced medical voices helping shape the institution.

The expertise of senior medical professionals such as Professor Glen Mola, Professor Linge, Professor Issi Kevau, Dr Kavu and others should be seriously considered through appropriate academic or clinical advisory structures.

Build the university. Build the systems. Attract the best medical minds. Produce doctors for the whole of PNG—not just the cities. 🇵🇬❤️🩺
