In 1898, steel magnate tried to personally buy the independence of the Philippines.
After the Spanish-American War, the agreed to pay Spain $20 million for the islands under the Treaty of Paris. Carnegie, a fierce anti-imperialist, offered to write a check to the U.S. Treasury for that exact amount on one condition: that the Philippine people be granted their freedom.
The U.S. government declined his unprecedented offer, choosing instead to maintain colonial control.
