According to Augustinian tradition, Saint Monica, deeply burdened by the death of her husband and by the waywardness of her son, Augustine, was granted a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus.
In this vision, Mary gave Monica a leather cincture and invited her to wear it as a constant reminder of her loving presence and as a visible sign of hope and encouragement.
Monica faithfully wore the cincture and, following Augustine's conversion, entrusted this devotion to her son. Through this tradition, the cincture came to hold a special place as a cherished symbol among those who follow the Rule of Saint Augustine.
This beautiful story reminds us of Mary as Mother of Consolationโa Mother who draws close to those who carry sorrow, anxiety, and the heavy burdens of those they love.
May we, like Saint Monica, remain steadfast in prayer and place our trust in God, believing that He is always at work, even when His answer seems distant and our prayers appear unanswered.

O Blessed Virgin Mary,
Our Lady of Consolation,
loving Mother and comfort of the afflicted,
I come to you in my time of need.
With a mother's tenderness,
look upon my sorrows and worries.
Comfort my heart in times of sadness,
strengthen me in moments of weakness,
and help me to trust always
in the loving providence of God.
O gentle Mother,
when I feel burdened and discouraged,
wrap me in your mantle of care.
Lead me to your Son, Jesus,
who is the true source of peace and hope.
Obtain for me the grace to endure trials
with patience and faith,
and grant that I may find comfort
in the love of God and in your motherly protection.
Our Lady of Consolation,
comforter of the sorrowful,
