Innovation in universities is no longer just about producing research papers. The deeper challenge is whether our institutions can form communities of learning where research is integrated into instruction, translated through partnerships, and brought into meaningful engagement with society.

I had the opportunity to attend the KTTO-IMPACT NXT Presidents’ Forum and Kick-off Workshop held at UP BGC-Henry Sy Sr. Hall last May 7, 2026, together with university leaders, researchers, and innovation advocates from across the country.

What struck me most was the growing realization that technology transfer is not merely a technical or legal process. It is an institutional commitment. It asks universities to rethink how research can enrich teaching, how students can encounter real-world problems through inquiry and innovation, and how knowledge can serve communities, especially where the needs are most urgent.

For us in the Ateneo tradition, research finds its fullest meaning when it becomes part of formation and mission. It must sharpen minds in the classroom, deepen compassion in community engagement, and help build solutions that are both excellent and humane.

The conversations during the Presidents’ Forum highlighted an important shift: universities are being called not only to generate knowledge, but also to accompany that knowledge into the world, where it can improve lives, strengthen industries, and respond to the hopes of communities.

Many thanks to DOST-PCIEERD, UP Diliman through UPSCALE Innovation Hub, and the UP System TTBDO for convening this meaningful initiative. The work ahead is demanding, but the direction is clear: research must become more transformative, collaborative, and socially responsive.

And perhaps that is the real promise of technology transfer, not simply commercialization, but creating pathways where academic knowledge becomes tangible hope and impact for society.

IN PHOTOS | Building Bridges Beyond Borders Through Technology and Collaboration

More than new equipment, the blessing of the SPARK-COIL facilities at Ateneo de Davao University on 13 May 2026 marks another step in strengthening meaningful global connections in education.

As classrooms continue to evolve beyond physical spaces, the SPARK-COIL initiative opens more opportunities for students and faculty to engage in international conversations, collaborative learning, and intercultural exchange without leaving Mindanao. Through technology-enabled collaboration, Ateneo de Davao moves closer to forming globally engaged learners grounded in local realities.

The SPARK-COIL (Strengthen and Promote Academic Agility, Resilience, and Knowledge Exchange through Collaborative Online International Learning) Project is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) initiative involving five Ateneo universities in the Philippines together with partner institutions from Spain and Poland.

The newly blessed equipment will support COIL-enhanced learning environments, hybrid academic engagements, and virtual international partnerships across various disciplines in the University.

The gathering also became a moment of gratitude for the faculty champions, collaborators, and offices helping shape a more connected and future-ready Ateneo education.

Faculty members interested in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and international academic engagements may coordinate with the Ateneo de Davao Internationalization for Mindanao (AIM) Office.

THE LEGAL MIND | Can misconduct cost a student her academic honors?

A Grade 12 student, attacked a schoolmate and was suspended after due process. Although academically qualified for honors, she was delisted from the honor roll under the school’s handbook but was still allowed to march on graduation day. Her guardian rejected the decision, and she verbally attacked school authorities both in person and online, and eventually filed a complaint with the Department of Education’s regional office.

"Was the school correct in disqualifying the student from the school’s honor list?

Yes.

Legally speaking, while the relationship between a student and a private school is imbued with public interest, it remains essentially contractual."
