Highlights of the Gassho-zukuri houses in Shirakawa-go (Gifu)

The steep, triangular roofs of Gassho-zukuri houses are built to withstand heavy snowfall—both functional and beautiful.

Many of these houses are over 200–250 years old, preserved across generations as part of village life.

Traditional techniques were used—wood beams are carefully joined without nails, showing incredible craftsmanship.

These aren’t just displays—some homes are still lived in, while others are open to visitors as museums and guesthouses.

From snow-covered rooftops in winter ❄️ to lush green surroundings in summer 🌿, each season gives the houses a completely different character.
