Family came down from the north. Friends and family flew in from Australia. For weeks, everyone met slowly, over long breakfasts, wine, wet clothes, sand brought into rooms, and saltwater left on skin.

By the time the wedding came, nobody felt newly introduced.

It was less a single day than the middle of something already happening: meals becoming nights, strangers becoming familiar, and the island keeping everyone from leaving.
