We woke up to a great news this morning as we learned that our flag-carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL) has received an invitation to join the oneworld Alliance during the IATA Annual General Meeting held on June 6, 2026 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. By doing so, PAL will be the 16th member airline of the oneworld Alliance, and the second Southeast Asian member airline after Malaysia Airlines. PAL and oneworld Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to make things formal as the integration will take between a year or two, making its membership official by mid-2027 the earliest. By joining an alliance, passengers of a member airline can enjoy benefits across all participating carriers, including access to shared lounges, the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer points with other member airlines, and access to a broader route network. This expanded connectivity makes it easier for travelers to reach more destinations through seamless travel arrangements among airlines within the alliance.

This could be a significant step forward for PAL as it continues to enhance its services to meet, and potentially exceed, the standards of its future partner airlines.

With this news, the plane spotting community is excited to see a PAL aircraft sporting the oneworld Livery just like what we've seen from other member airlines that operate here in Manila. Some have rumored that one of PAL's future Airbus A350-1000, potentially RP-C3513 will be painted with that livery as they have seen the aircraft unpainted yet doing test flights in the Airbus Factory in Toulouse, France. But I don't think we'll have that livery anytime soon yet, at least with the few incoming Airbus A350-1000 in the fleet. See, PAL is still processing its membership and is being integrated with the alliance and as mentioned earlier, this may be completed as early as 2027 or later in 2028. Not until its membership is formalized and in effect, we won't see the PAL oneworld Livery anytime soon.

I also remember the President of Philippine Airlines, Richard Nuttall being interviewed during the World Aviation Festival on the possibility of the airline of joining the alliance. It is also worth noting that Richard Nuttall was an executive of one of the other major airline alliances back then. With PAL continuing its expansion through acquisition of new aircraft, expanding its routes, and now set to joining an alliance, looks like it would be PAL's golden era once again!

Anyway for this photo, yep, I kinda pushed my camera to its tolerable limits. With my long lens not really suitable for low-light, cranking up the ISO and hoping for the best with my denoising application, this is what I've got though. I'm keen to do more of this from this angle anytime soon!

Smooth Climb!

When my father was still alive, we were talking about taking a long exposure photo of the aircraft's lights as it flies out of the airport, with a quick flash to make the aircraft visible. Of course we cannot do the flash thing since it's not safe to do so as it may blind the pilots and it's a big safety issue.

I got the opportunity to do well, half of the desired shot last April. The climb was smooth. The shutter was open for 57.5 seconds and the result didn't disappoint!

When Xiamen Airlines felt cute for a day.

Xiamen Airlines gave us a surprise when they decided to deploy something unusual for one of their flights to Manila. While it's normal for them to use Boeing 737-800s for their flights, they used the shorter, 737-700 for this particular flight. This is just one of their four 737-700s in their current fleet as per data from Planespotters.net.

Seeing this aircraft type for the first time brought back the same excitement I felt when I first spotted its direct competitor, the Airbus A319. I find it really cute though. Their 737-700s are configured to accommodate 128 passengers in a two-class configuration while their 737-800s can accommodate as much as 184 in aircraft with an all economy configuration (while some have 8 business class seats then the rest, 162 or 156 economy seats).

Looks like it's just a one-off deployment though, but hopefully I could see it again in better conditions!

It's during daylight when colors pop out!

I miss the days when AirAsia Malaysia deploys their Airbus A320s to Manila for their daytime KUL-MNL-KUL flights via AK582/583. It is in their A320s where the airline has most of its special liveries painted. However nowadays, the flight is operated by the longer Airbus A321s, it can probably be due to the increased demand for that flight hence the upgauge.

But there are still rare instances nowadays that they deploy the A320 for that flight. When they do, sometimes it's the one with a special livery! AirAsia Malaysia sent the other aircraft bearing the "Just Coastin' In Malaysia" livery for this daytime flight that day. I said "other aircraft" because another aircraft, 9M-AGP had the same livery too. While I didn't get the chance to spot its arrival, I was fortunate enough to spot its departure while I was waiting for another special aircraft that day.

I appreciated the livery better now because I've already seen it in daylight. Colors popping out, it also gives that sunny tropical vibe that the design is conveying. I do wish that they deploy more of these special liveried A320s more often here in Manila during daylight.

An update on our fundraising raffle, "Win it for Winnie: Refuelled"

A few weeks ago, I announced a fundraising raffle to help cover my father's hospitalization expenses, with prizes generously sponsored by friends from the plane spotting community.

It is with deep sorrow that I share that my father passed away on May 28, 2026. As a result, the raffle draw originally scheduled for May 31, 2026 was postponed to give our family time to grieve and make the necessary arrangements during this difficult period.

After careful consideration, we have decided to continue with the raffle, with a few changes. The raffle will be renamed in honor of my father, and all proceeds will now go toward his funeral expenses and helping our family recover from the financial challenges brought about by his illness and passing. The raffle period will also be extended until June 15, 2026, as an additional prize has been generously sponsored by one of my closest friends in the plane spotting community. Details about this exciting change will be posted as soon as possible.

All existing entries remain valid and will automatically be carried over to the updated raffle, with participants now having an additional prize to win.
