📍 Biri Rock Formation, Northern Samar
The island of Biri is in the northernmost part of the Visayan Archipelago. The iconic rock formations were formed more than 20 million years ago from the movement of tectonic plates, ferocious waves and winds and storm from the Pacific Ocean.
The location was definitely hard to get to. You need to ENDURE a 1-hour boat ride from Lavezares Port. That was definitely the most intense boat ride I have ever experienced. Thankfully the waves were calmer at that time and we were able to reach the island of Biri in one piece.
We started the tour at 04:30 am to catch the sunrise from Macadlaw Rock Formation. Get ready to get wet as we wade through up to waist deep seawater in pitch darkness for about half an hour! It was a scary experience indeed! Snake sighting was definitely possible! 😱
Then we traveled on foot by land and sea 😂 to the next rock 🪨. A half-a-kilometer boardwalk path goes to Bel-At. Here lies the natural pool of seawater where you can take a quick dip if the waves are not too harsh. BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPE INDEED! 🌅
TRAVEL TIPS:
✅ Must travel with a tour guide! The trail and the waves are just too dangerous to DIY! Always follow your guide. There are areas you won't be able to go to depending on the tidal range.
✅ Bring extra shirt --- you will most definitely get wet!
✅ Bring some snack and water as it will be a long hike and you might get stranded if the water becomes too deep to navigate back to the main island.
✅ Enjoy the view!
🚗 HOW TO GET TO BIRI:
🛫 By air. Catarman Airport is the main gateway to the province coming from Manila.
🚌 Buses from Manila going to the Visayas island via RORO through the port of Allen, Samar, about 45 minutes from Catarman.
🚌 From Catraman, take a jeepney for more than an hour to Lavezares Port
🚣♀️ From Lavezares Port, board a pump boat to Biri Island. Travel time is about 1 hour. There are no fixed schedule of departure of boats. You can wait for other passengers so you can split the cost or you can charter the whole boat.
🏍 Once you reach the island of Biri, take a habal-habal to your hotel. A habal-habal is like a motorcycle taxi where it can accommodate up to 5 people or even more. 😂
