Get to know the spiny flower mantis (Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii)! When under threat, it strikes a pose in an attempt to intimidate its foe. By raising its wings, the critter reveals markings that resemble big eyes and makes itself appear larger than it actually is. But this mantis doesn’t always have such a striking look. In the early stages of life, it looks like an ant; it becomes more colorful with each molt as it grows.

Ants do not "look at you" in the same way humans do, as their vision and perception are different. What might appear as an ant looking at you is likely a combination of their sensory organs and how they navigate their environment:

Compound Eyes:

Ants possess compound eyes, which are made up of many individual light-sensitive units called ommatidia. These eyes are excellent at detecting movement and changes in light intensity, rather than forming sharp, detailed images like human eyes. When you move, the ants' compound eyes are highly effective at registering your presence as a change in their visual field.

Antennae:

Ants heavily rely on their antennae for sensing their surroundings. These antennae are equipped with chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors, allowing them to detect scents, pheromones, and vibrations, as well as navigate and explore their environment. When an ant encounters something new or a potential threat, it often uses its antennae to investigate and gather information.

Orientation and Navigation:

Ants are constantly orienting themselves about their surroundings to find food, return to their nest, or avoid predators. Their movements and apparent "gaze" are often a part of this continuous process of navigation and exploration, rather than a direct focus on a specific individual.
