Our holistic water management system working at my house saves approximately 80000 to 90000 litres of drinking water per month from being used for flushing toilets. See write below of holistic water management system
Explained below is an excellent household water recycling and re-use method devised and being successfully used at my home. It's high time this is taken up on a large scale to mitigate impending potable water shortage across India.
Let rain water go only for recharging the ground water tables and excess be channelized to our lakes, tanks, rivers, etc
Use waste water generated from bath and washing machines and kitchens for FLUSHING the TOILETS and for cleaning the walkways, driveways.
Pl see the write up below
We have to have a very holistic approach to water management system in our daily lives.
Here is a write up of water management system working at my place
Rainwater is the purest form of water that we get from nature that requires no further purification. It gets polluted only if the path that it takes on to reach the ground water tables is polluted and not clean. Hence it is very essential that the pathways of rainwater are kept clean and so clean rainwater flows and charges the ground water tables.
If people are collecting the rainwater for storage and future use and not for recharging the ground water system, then the entire ball game changes. Then the storage system, water pathways have to be kept very clean by using various filters.
I fail to understand why people do not give emphasis to a system wherein we can use our waste bathwater, waste water from washing machines, waste water from kitchens for reuse for flushing the toilets. This activity is a 24*7*365 day activity wheras the rain water harvesting activity is an activity which is just for a period of 3 months or maximum 4 months in a year. We have to have a very holistic approach to water management system encompassing both rain water harvesting management for storage and reuse as well as charging ground water tables and also grey water reuse for flushing toilets and educating everyone that water is a scarce essential resource.
I am posting below the activities of water management system that I have been following for the last more than 12 1/2 years
Why don't u think of this system which is being demonstrated below
This is what I have done at my place where twenty seven to twenty eight people stay. Please go through it. Individuals have to take initiatives too
BETTER WAY OF USING WATER IN OUR HOUSES- My practical idea
My intention is not to use the grey water ( From bathing, washing and Kitchen) for gardening purpose but to make proper use of water every day in the House. I have done the Following:
1) connected all the baths and the Kitchen Toilets to a separate Underground Tank of 6' X 5' X 7' Depth WITH A 0.5 HP OPEN TANK SUBMERSIBLE PUMP- stainless steel constructed body of good make. This way I collect all the Bath water and Kitchen water At one Place. I pump this water to a Separate overhead tank for grey water . The outlet of this separate overhead tank for grey water is connected to all the Flush toilets in the building. The outlet of the Flush Toilets are connected to the main Outlet pipe of the Building that connects to the Sewage line. I do not have a car otherwise I would used this grey water for Cleaning the Exteriors of the Car, Car tyres etc. 2) this way I have reduced the burden on the Sewage outlet.
3) If you see an average person uses the Flush toilet about 10 to 12 times a day. Hence he consumes about 140 to 170 litres of water just for flushing the toilet. For his bathing and washing purpose he uses another 50 to 60 litres. For his bare Sustenance (Drinking, Cooking, washing vessels) he uses approx 15 litres. Hence his use of absolute pure water for his Basic Living is Just about 60 to 70 litres and for his use for Flushing the s**t of toilets he uses approx 140 to 170 litres. I felt this 140 to 170litres of water can be reduced if I can reuse my bath water and kitchen waste water.
4) I have not tried purifying the grey water (though I know people who have Biotech Technologies for purifying the grey and Sewage water) as I did not have sufficient space in my plot to put such a System.
5) If All Houses and Multi storied Housing Society Complexes just practise this method then the Water problem that we are facing in India will be TAKEN CARE OF TO A VERY LARGE EXTENT. Only thing that is needed is a Little bit of Willingness of the people to implement this. This will also Reduce the Burden on the City's Sewage treatment plants drastically and these plants also be able to work very efficiently in the Water treatment.
6) Experts in Roof Top Gardening have told that Soap water does not have impact on Plants but I am little scared to Experiment on My Roof top Gardening.
7) any one can come and see the system working in my place. Showing any Photographs will not give any idea. You have to see it to believe it If you need any clarification you can also contact me on 09243460550, 09243444828
8)We have got so much used to Get everything at Subsidised rates that we have stopped thinking and valuing the various services or essential natural resources that we use. I had a Tough Time explaining to my Contractor in implementing this idea which came into my mind when I wanted to Construct the House.
9)In addition to the Reuse of Grey water I have also Implemented a simple rain water harvesting system although it was not mandatory for me to do it as my plot was small (not the type which so many of water experts propagate to use with Sintex tanks, , POP UP Filters, etc) I have Slightly made my terrace Roof Slope to one point on the terrace during the finishing stage. I connected the pipe from that Point to Another underground tank (Whose Bottom I did not put any Concrete - just a Very Thin layer of Cement). All the Rain water Gets Collected in this tank and the Water Just Keeps Seeping into the Ground water System. This way My Bore well (having a depth of just 150 feet- nowadays we hear of bore wells being dug to Depths around 1000' in many parts of bangalore) is also getting Recharged every time it rains.
10) In fact in Bangalore situation is so bad that water is supplied in some areas every alternate day for a couple of hours and In some places water is Given only once or twice a Week for a couple of Hours and also if there is Slight Disruption in this service people are forced to buy tanker water. I proudly say that I do not buy tankers any time. I have 25 people staying in my Building . I am able to provide to all people in my house round the Clock potable Drinking water.
11) When I wanted to Construct Only the Water supply Board engineers encouraged me saying that my idea can work and they wished that if all people in Bangalore try to think and implement such ideas the problems being faced by bangaloreans with respect to water will be Solved immediately
12) by using above methods I have ensured that 80000 to 90000 litres of good drinking water per month is not utilised for flushing toilets. Besides, the rain water harvesting system ensures that at least 140000 litres of Rainwater annually gets recharged to the ground water table.
