Dutch solar innovator Wattlab and Germany’s HGK Shipping have unveiled the Blue Marlin, the world’s first hybrid solar-powered inland cargo vessel, marking a major leap toward decarbonizing waterway transport.
Officially christened in Hamburg on July 3, the 86-meter vessel will carry bulk goods for steel giant Salzgitter AG across Germany’s canal network. Equipped with 192 solar panels generating up to 37,500 kWh annually, Blue Marlin directly uses solar power for propulsion—an industry first.
The vessel also features a diesel-electric “Future Fuel Ready” system, remote navigation technology, and peak shaving to reduce fuel use. Its shallow draft and modular design enable operations in low water and cargo loads up to 3,110 tons.
HGK’s Florian Bleikamp called the vessel “a powerful symbol of innovation,” while Salzgitter’s Fabian Gerdes highlighted its role in cutting CO₂ emissions by 36,000 kg per year.
Building on lessons from MS Helios, Blue Marlin integrates solar into its drivetrain, earning the Gold Green Award for sustainable shipping.
