Wiewiórki występują w Europie, Azji oraz Amerykach. Nie zobaczymy ich w Australii ze względu na izolację tego kontynentu przez ocean oraz na Antarktydzie. Należą do gryzoni, ważą około 200-300 gram a ich głównym składnikiem żywieniowym są nasiona (w tym orzechy), które są w stanie zbierać i chować w celu przetrwania zimy. Są raczej samotnikami, nie dobierają się w pary, nie zapadają w sen zimowy, nie są zwierzętami terytorialnymi. Ciąża u wiewiórek trwa od 38 do 39 dni. Ich przednie zęby nigdy nie przestają rosnąć (jest to cecha wielu gryzoni).
Ciekawostka: Kiedy wiewiórki uciekają, zaczynają biegnąć zygzakiem – jest to sposób w jaki unikają ataków drapieżnych ptaków.

Squirrels are found in Europe, Asia and the Americas. We will not see them in Australia due to the isolation of this continent by the ocean and in Antarctica. They belong to rodents, weigh about 200-300 grams and their main nutritional component are seeds (including nuts), which are able to collect and hide in order to survive the winter. They are rather loners, do not mate, do not hibernate, and are not territorial animals. Gestation in squirrels lasts from 38 to 39 days. Their front teeth never stop growing (a feature of many rodents).
Fun fact: When the squirrels run away, they start zigzagging - this is the way they avoid attacks by birds of prey.
