The Puerto Rican Euphonia is an endemic species of the Puerto Rican archipelago; it exists naturally nowhere else in the world.

The first time I saw one was in Guanica State Forest. Ironically, I had gotten lost in the forest that day. When I was finally found, the person who helped me wanted to make up for the experience by showing me one of Puerto Rico’s feathered treasures: the Puerto Rican Euphonia. Since then, I have returned several times, and every encounter with this bird is still special.

Its colors are simply stunning. The intense yellow stands out among the vegetation, while its call, so soft and delicate, seems almost too sweet for such a small bird. It is one of those species that always brings a smile to my face and reminds me why I keep returning to the forest.

El Jilguero de Puerto Rico es una especie endémica de nuestro archipiélago; no existe de forma natural en ningún otro lugar del mundo.

La primera vez que vi uno fue en el Bosque Estatal de Guánica. Curiosamente, ese día me había perdido en el bosque. Cuando finalmente me encontraron, la persona que me ayudó quiso compensar aquella experiencia mostrándome uno de los tesoros de Puerto Rico: el Jilguero. Desde entonces he regresado varias veces y cada encuentro sigue siendo especial.

Sus colores son simplemente espectaculares. El amarillo intenso resalta entre la vegetación, mientras que su canto, tan suave y delicado, parece demasiado dulce para un ave tan pequeña. Es una de esas especies que siempre me alegra encontrar y que me recuerda por qué sigo regresando al bosque.

The first time I saw a Northern Red Bishop, I was amazed by the bright splash of red moving through a sea of green grasses. What surprised me even more was its delicate call, so gentle for such a striking bird. The way it flies, almost hopping above the grass, makes it a joy to watch.

These photographs were taken at Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge. On my most recent visit, as I was leaving, I was fortunate enough to see eight of them at once—a sight that felt like a true blessing.



La primera vez que vi un Obispo Anaranjado, me sorprendió ese intenso destello rojo moviéndose entre un mar de hierbas verdes. Pero aún más me sorprendió su canto: tan suave y delicado para un ave tan llamativa. Su forma de volar, casi como si fuera saltando sobre la vegetación, lo convierte en una de las aves más hermosas de observar.

Estas fotografías fueron tomadas en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Laguna Cartagena. En mi visita más reciente, justo cuando me disponía a salir, tuve la fortuna de observar ocho individuos al mismo tiempo. Fue uno de esos momentos que se sienten como una verdadera bendición.

The Osprey is one of those birds that never fails to amaze me. Whether it’s perched and scanning the water, carrying its catch, or diving feet-first in pursuit of prey, every encounter is exciting to witness and photograph.

These images were captured at Boquerón National Wildlife Refuge and Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge, two incredible places where nature constantly reminds us why conservation matters.



El águila pescadora es una de esas aves que nunca deja de sorprenderme. Ya sea observando atentamente el agua desde una tronco, transportando su presa o lanzándose en picada para capturar un pez, cada encuentro es emocionante de observar y fotografiar.

Estas imágenes fueron capturadas en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Boquerón y en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Laguna Cartagena, dos lugares extraordinarios donde la naturaleza nos recuerda constantemente la importancia de la conservación.

Green Heron

Often overlooked among mangroves and shaded wetlands, the Green Heron is a patient and remarkably intelligent hunter. Perfectly camouflaged within streamside vegetation, it waits in near silence before striking prey with astonishing speed.

Unlike most birds, the Green Heron has been observed using tools, occasionally placing twigs, leaves, or insects on the water’s surface to lure fish within reach. Males and females also work together during nesting season, sharing the responsibilities of building the nest and raising their young.

A quiet masterpiece of the wetlands.



Martinete

Frecuentemente oculto entre manglares y humedales sombreados, el martinete es un cazador paciente y extraordinariamente inteligente. Perfectamente camuflado entre la vegetación, permanece inmóvil y en silencio antes de lanzarse sobre su presa con asombrosa rapidez.

A diferencia de muchas aves, el martinete ha sido observado utilizando herramientas, dejando caer pequeñas ramas, hojas o insectos sobre el agua para atraer peces a su alcance. Durante la temporada de anidación, el macho y la hembra también colaboran en la construcción del nido y el cuidado de sus crías.

Ave endémica de Puerto Rico. Un pájaro negro de pico grueso con manchas rojizas sobre los ojos, en la garganta y debajo de la cola. Habita bosques secos y húmedos con vegetación densa. Se alimenta principalmente de semillas, frutas y brotes; estudios indican que solo una tercera parte de su dieta son insectos. Su llamado es fuerte y distintivo. En mi experiencia, casi siempre se escucha antes de verse, ya que suele esconderse o alejarse rápidamente al notar personas.

An endemic bird of Puerto Rico. A thick-billed black bird with reddish patches above the eyes, on the throat, and under the tail. It lives in moist and dry forests with dense undergrowth. It feeds mainly on seeds, fruits, and buds; studies show that only about one-third of its diet consists of insects. Its call is loud and distintive. In my experience, you usually hear it before you see it, since it quickly hides or flies away when people approach.

La reinita común es un residente permanente ampliamente distribuido en Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Puede encontrarse en bosques, jardines, manglares, cafetales, áreas urbanas y zonas costeras.

The Bananaquit is a permanent resident widely distributed throughout Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. It can be found in forests, gardens, mangroves, coffee farms, urban areas, and coastal habitats.

* Es la única ave cantora de Puerto Rico con un pico corto y fuertemente curvado.
* Pequeña, activa y muy curiosa.
* Posee partes superiores gris oscuro o negras, una ceja blanca distintiva y partes inferiores amarillas.
* Machos y hembras tienen el mismo plumaje y no pueden distinguirse visualmente en el campo.
* It is the only Puerto Rican songbird with a short, strongly curved bill.
* Small, energetic, and highly curious.
* Dark gray to black upperparts, a bold white eyebrow stripe, and bright yellow underparts.

Alimentación / Diet

Se alimenta principalmente de néctar, frutas, insectos pequeños y arañas. Frecuentemente perfora o “roba” néctar haciendo un pequeño agujero en la base de las flores para alcanzar el dulce néctar sin entrar directamente por la flor.

Feeds primarily on nectar, fruits, small insects, and spiders. Bananaquits are well known for “nectar robbing,” piercing small holes at the base of flowers to reach nectar without entering the flower directly.
