📷 Putting together Tan Lip Seng: A Life in Colour has been a much more personal journey than I expected.

When Objectifs first approached us, I felt mainly a sense of responsibility: to safeguard Dad’s work, understand what he wanted, and represent his photography faithfully.

🗂️ But going through thousands of images, old prints, unpublished books and notes gradually became something else. I found myself rediscovering photographs I had forgotten, learning more about how Dad created some of his most distinctive works, and even working backwards from finished images to reconstruct techniques I had never properly asked him about.

⌨️ One of the most satisfying moments came when we eventually found Dad’s own typewritten notes describing his process. Much of what we had pieced together was there in his own words. It felt, in a small way, as though the conversation with him was continuing.

🔍 And the discoveries have not stopped. I still find myself investigating photographs, trying to understand what he saw and how he made them.

❤️ The exhibition has therefore become more than an exercise in preserving Dad’s work. It has also been a way of rediscovering him through photography.

In one of our last conversations, I promised him that I would help bring more of his work to a wider audience. I am beginning to understand just how large that promise was.

But I am also beginning to enjoy the journey.

A few more moments from the opening of “Tan Lip Seng: A Life In Colour” on 8 August 2026.

What moved me most was not only seeing family and old friends gathered around Dad’s photographs, but also meeting visitors who had never known him or encountered his work before.

Dad took many of these photographs simply because something caught his eye — a particular light, colour, shape or fleeting moment. To watch new viewers pause before them, look closely and begin forming their own connection with the images was deeply gratifying.

An exhibition gives photographs a new life. They leave the privacy of an archive or a family collection and begin speaking to people their maker may never have met. I think Dad would have been quietly delighted by that.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us, and to those who have shared photographs and memories of the day. For those who could not be there at the opening, the exhibition continues until 27 September 2026. We would be very happy for you to discover his world in colour.
