Into the Cracks

Into the Cracks Join us by walking with us, hosting us, by reading along, or writing letters. INTO THE CRACKS is art project, self-discovery, and political activism.

Carina Riedl and Dieter Kovačič plan to walk roughly 2500 kilometres from Vienna to Istanbul and read the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Initiators Carina Riedl and Dieter Kovačič plan to walk roughly 2500 kilometres from Vienna to Istanbul and read the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And we would like you to join us: by walking with us, hosting us, o

r by reading along and thus raising your voice for an open Europe; through letters or posts of all kinds, on the trail or on the web. INTO THE CRACKS crosses borders. Over 99 days, from September 3rd to December 10th, 2022 – International Human Rights Day, celebrating the 74th anniversary of the United Nations’ proclamation of the UDHR – we will walk a path which, in its opposite direction, has become known as the Balkan route. It will take us to ten different countries – Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey – and to territories where political tensions have caused violence, war, and deep cracks. These regions have seen migration movements for centuries, and the Balkans remain among the hot spots of European migration policy to date. Our project is in many respects a borderline experience: geographically, personally, and physically. Multiple times we will leave the EU’s external borders, asking ourselves: What does it mean to be Fortress Europe? How does this affect us? How do we respond to ongoing, systematic human rights violations against refugees, to illegal pushbacks, reports of torture, rape, and methodical violence in detention centres just outside Europe’s thresholds? INTO THE CRACKS seeks the encounter. We will record the entire trail using two GoPro cameras: one facing backwards, the other ahead. Also, we will portray some of the people we encounter – those who kindly agreed to host us as well as strangers we happen to meet on the way. Each day, we will invite one of them to join us in reading an article of the Human Rights Declaration. This way, we hope to call back this text to our memories, to give it time and space, to listen to it, to relate to it. All material will be accessible via our website, with daily updates. INTO THE CRACKS is participatory. This transnational project deals with issues such as migration, leaving, and freedom of movement, tackling the very nature of borders. Convinced that borders are intrinsically permeable, genuine places of exchange and encounter, we will cross national, language, and genre barriers, but also blur the lines between the hyper-concrete situation of walking a physical trail and its virtual counterpart of following it in the digital realm. As the separation between those who act and those who receive becomes fluent, we want to create space for dialogue and action, open to all: physically and digitally, on the road, and in our website’s virtual common area. Each and every fellow traveller, host, and guest is invited to shape and contribute to the project – and thus be part of INTO THE CRACKS.

Day 99:

Listening to The Residents’ ‘Here We Come, Constantinople’, Dieter and Carina passed the old and very CRACKy 5th century city walls after walking/dancing/flying/laughing their final kilometres along the coast of the Sea of Marmara.

Their arrival between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque is well-documented.
Deeply grateful to everyone involved, here’s one more dump of photos taken by Carina on their 99th and final walking day.

Day 98:

Istanbul means ‘into the city’. 176 nations live in this huge city, all the clichés are here as well, but none remains unsubverted.

‘Into the city’ has been our CRACKER’s motto for their next to last day of walking – as it kind of was in the 97 days before that. They encountered a dog that barked almost in tune with the muezzin’s call for prayer as they crossed all the outskirts with a constant view of the skyline.

When a man passed them, they greeted each other English, which lead to the 99th and final ENCOUNTER of the day. His name is Wisdom, he was born in Abuja, Nigeria, and he is currently doing his post-grad studies in economy here in Istanbul. He showed Carina and Dieter Gelişim University, where he read Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: https://www.intothecracks.com/encounter-99/

This is the Article:
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

The second part of the day brought a 12km beach walk past lovers, e-rollers, cats, and more cats.

Almost there now. The final few kilometres shall lead us to the square between Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque at about 4 pm local time (2 pm CET) on Saturday, aka International Human Rights Day.

Day 97:

Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.

Article 8 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was read for us by Gülşen: https://www.intothecracks.com/encounter-98/

Gülşen opened her café and patisserie shop in Büyükçekmece a year ago, she runs it with her son and many friends, who were busy modelling chocolates and various cakes with a lot of love and taste.

The rest of the day brought more sounds and views of the ocean, but also barb wire fence around fancy hotels and holiday houses. The dogs became friendlier, though, as our CRACKERS Dieter and Carina officially passed the municipal borders of Istanbul, a city so huge that you need more than a day to walk through it.

Their destination on Saturday will be between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
Be prepared to celebrate with us by uploading a picture of a CRACK on www.intothecracks.com!

Day 96:

A day that begins with an ocean view is a good day. And it should continue with an ocean view: Carina and Dieter continued over sandy beaches past detached houses on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, feeling fancy for preferring this café-lined promenade to the straight clearway D100 that runs directly to Istanbul.

Sightings included: two dogs, a palm lead in the shape of a broom, temporarily unused deckchairs and such, and an oil rig. All the time, the CRACKERS had the Marmara murmur in their ears.

Our ENCOUNTER of the Day is called Efe, runs a café and works as a lifeguard on three different beaches.

This is Efe reading UDHR Article 7: https://www.intothecracks.com/encounter-97/

And this is Article 7:
All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

Day 95:

Article 6:
Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

The Article was read by Zeynep, who was born in Çorlu and works there in a burger restaurant. This is her video: https://www.intothecracks.com/encounter-96/

But our ENCOUNTER #96 was not the only encounter today. On their walk, our CRACKERS encountered:
a bit of the sun, which has been unusual lately;
the world’s most dignified beggar: a polite man in a black coat;
a chai vendor, who once travelled to Uzbekistan on foot;
a huge flock of sheep guided by at least three shepherds and half a dozen dogs;
the world’s most sinister petrol station; and:
the ocean!
