The Hidden Data Economy: From Collection to Weaponization
We discuss how data exposure begins long before a breach occurs, starting with every digital interaction we make. We explore how retailers and platforms monetize customer data through data brokers who aggregate fragmented information into detailed profiles.
We examine how this data becomes valuable on the dark web when refined and weaponized by attackers, and we highlight real-world breaches like Equifax and LinkedIn that exposed millions of records.
We emphasize that the real danger lies in data correlation—when attackers combine multiple datasets to build complete pictures of individuals and organizations. We stress the critical importance of password hygiene, unique credentials, multi-factor authentication, and treating identity security as a business priority rather than just an IT concern.
We conclude that in today's data economy, the security perimeter has shifted from protecting networks to protecting identities and every digital footprint tied to our organizations.
