Look at any DSLR or Mirrorless camera today and you will find the letter M as one of the choices for setting an Exposure, M meaning MANUAL, but it also means MASTER as in YOU can be the MASTER of exposure, a MASTER of light and the understanding of light and exposure probably does not get any easier than this.
Easy stuff...seriously, it really is this easy to not only create a correct exposure but also to create a dramatic exposure in the process, anywhere in the world, including the intensely colorful island of Burano, Italy on any given afternoon, when you use the ‘Sunny 16 Exposure Rule...
“On a clear, bright sunny day, and with your lens set to F/16, THE correct exposure for ANY front-lit or side-lit scene will be at a shutter speed that is the same number of your ISO...i.e. F/16 with 800 ISO, you use a 1/800 second shutter speed as I did here, AND since my exposure is only correct for subjects in the sun, (the painted houses of Burano) anything that is in the shadows, the shade, will record as a severe under-exposure, which is WHY my leaping model AND the two tourists in the background are silhouettes, because they are both in areas of shade within this bright and sunny composition! See? A dramatic looking exposure to be sure, but like I said, an EASY exposure too!
Nikon D500, Nikkor 18-300mm, at 100mm, F/16@1/800 sec. 800 ISO, Daylight/Sunny WB (in post-prodessing, I kicked up the contrast which made the ‘blacks’ more dense, plus I did clone out some distracting electrical wires). Wishing everyone a colorful weekend!
