Topeng Monyet 🙊
[eng below]Przez wiele lat na ulicach Indonezji można było spotkać przedstawienia Topeng Monyet – widowiska z udziałem tresowanych małp zmuszanych do odgrywania ludzkich ról. Ubrane w kolorowe kostiumy i dziecięce maski zwierzęta stawały się elementem ulicznej rozrywki, za którą często kryły się przemoc, izolacja i życie na krótkim łańcuchu.
Prezentowane portrety powstały poza kontekstem ulicznego spektaklu. Umieszczone na ciemnym, neutralnym tle małpy przestają być częścią przedstawienia, a stają się głównymi bohaterami obrazu. Groteskowe maski, które miały je upodobnić do ludzi, nabierają nowego znaczenia. Zamiast ukrywać zwierzęta, podkreślają ich bezradność i oddalenie od naturalnego świata.
Projekt jest próbą spojrzenia na zwierzęta, które przez lata były traktowane jak narzędzia rozrywki. To opowieść o utracie wolności i tożsamości, ale także próba przywrócenia indywidualności istotom, których cierpienie pozostawało niewidoczne za kostiumem i maską.

[eng]For many years, Topeng Monyet performances could be seen on the streets of Indonesia. These spectacles featured trained monkeys forced to perform human roles for public entertainment. Dressed in colorful costumes and children's masks, the animals became part of a form of street amusement that often concealed violence, isolation, and a life spent on a short chain.
These portraits were created outside the context of the street performance. Placed against a dark, neutral background, the monkeys cease to be part of a spectacle and instead become the central subjects of the image. The grotesque masks, originally intended to make them resemble humans, take on a new meaning. Rather than concealing the animals, they emphasize their vulnerability and separation from the natural world.
This project is an attempt to look at animals that for years were treated as tools of entertainment. It is a story about the loss of freedom and identity, but also an effort to restore individuality to beings whose suffering remained hidden behind costumes and masks.
