Consider the w**d,
The wildflower,
Such a waif and iron maiden,
Clothed in splendid simplicity
Rooted in hardscrabble.
You can have your cultivated rose,
The orchid, pale and still.
Give me daisies on the breeze,
Violets in a cream pitcher
On the window sill.
The Chickory once prized
To warm the morning cold
Now flushes, mowed down and flushes again,
against the side of the road.
Then Morning Glory,
Oh, you rare blue glory girl,
Climb, cover and glorify your world.
The chain link,
The concrete,
All your canvas to fill.
Give me the w**ds,
Those persistent,
resistant girls!
Those that need no tending,
No training,
No control.
Sprouting in the cracks,
Taking over the lawn.
Rarity without preciousness,
Beauty without cultivation, Persistence without aggression,
Wildness without needing to be spectacular.
My favorite flowers are w**ds!
