We did a Big Onion Walking Tour of the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights on Saturday. It was a miserable cold rainy day but the tour itself was fantastic and shared with good friends. Kudos to our tour guide, Lance, who was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Enjoy the images of the day! (Be sure to click on that first image to see the full pano.)

Wrapping up our New Zealand Road Scholar trip, today’s images feature Zealandia, the Wellington Cable Car and our Valentine’s Day Round the Bays tour. Zealandia is a wildlife sanctuary above Wellington covering just under a square mile. The sanctuary, surrounded by a pest-exclusion fence, is a good example of an ecological island, which allows the original natural ecosystems to recover.

It’s been my pleasure sharing our memories from NZ over the past few weeks.

Wellington on the North Island is the capital of New Zealand. It’s the windiest city in the world with average wind speeds of 17 mph as breezes from Antarctica come up through the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Two days after we departed the winds hit 120 mph (highest winds in a decade), causing much damage! Today’s images will focus on the city itself and tomorrow I’ll post pictures from outlying areas.

Our last days on New Zealand’s South Island included visits to Garston, Arrowtown and Queenstown as well as aerial views of the South Island. Between Garston and Queenstown we were able to experience Real Country to see sheep shearing, sheep dogs at work, and more. Arrowtown is an historic gold mining town where in 1870 Chinese workers were “invited, but unwelcome” facing extreme prejudice, social segregation, and harassment. Their humble settlement remains today. Queenstown is a resort community in the Otago Region with a building boom.

Fiordland National Park in the southwest of the South Island is the largest of New Zealand’s national parks covering an area of 4,900 square miles and is a major part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With only one paved road in the park from Te Anau to Milford Sound most of the park is remote, untouched wilderness. Today’s images highlight Te Anau to Milford Sound with the Milford Sound images coming tomorrow. I think you’ll agree it’s stunningly beautiful!

Our second domestic flight in New Zealand was from Christchurch (Canterbury Region) to Invercargill (Southland Region). In this southernmost part of the South Island we explored Invercargill, Riverton and Clifden and experienced some lovely seascapes. Invercargill is the most southern city in the world at 46.4 degrees south (the equivalent to the north would be Quebec City.)
