Day 31 – For

Psalm 23:4 — “…for You are with me.”

It’s easy to overlook the smallest words in Scripture. We zero in on words like shadow and valley but a single “for” can hold an entire verse together.

David had just said: “I will fear no evil.” So, we want to ask, How? The valley is still dark. Evil is still real. The dangers are still there.

For.

“For” is the reason behind his confidence. His courage isn’t based on wishful thinking or blind faith. It rests on something far more solid. Biblical faith is never without reason. God calls His people to trust Him because of who He is and what He has promised.

We find that throughout Scripture. Noah built the ark because God had spoken. Abraham left his homeland because God had called him. Joshua marched around Jericho because God had given His Word. Their obedience was not irrational; it was rooted in confidence that God keeps His promises.

David is no different.

He doesn’t deny the valley or the reality of evil. Instead, he anchors his heart in the character of God. Circumstances change from one season to the next, but the Shepherd never changes.

That truth is just as important for us. So much of our anxiety comes from focusing on the unknowns ahead.

What if this happens?
What if things get worse?
What if I don’t have the strength?

Those questions can consume us but David gently redirects us. Instead of living by “what if,” he teaches us to live by “for”.

For God is faithful.
For His promises are true.
For He never abandons us.
For He knows the way.

Faith always has a reason, even when it doesn’t have every answer.

When I cross a bridge, I never stop to inspect every beam and cable. I cross because I trust the one who designed and built it and I’ve seen the bridge work for others.

That is how faith works. I don’t place my confidence in my ability to face the valley. I place it in the One who has proven Himself faithful time and time again.

Hebrews 10:23
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”

Every one of us has a “for.” What valley you are walking through today? Let your confidence begin where David’s did—with your Shepherd.
