A very strong El Niño has developed, and there’s an 63% chance we see a Super El Niño into the Winter. Oklahoma’s weather could take a much stormier turn.

Expect a hot, humid summer with occasional heavy rain, but the bigger impacts would likely arrive during fall and winter. A stronger southern jet stream often brings more frequent storm systems across Oklahoma, increasing the chances for soaking rains, flooding, ice storms, and even snow events.

Looking ahead to spring 2027, abundant Gulf moisture and an active storm track could also increase severe weather opportunities across the Southern Plains.

In short: less drought, more storms.

A powerful storm complex already ongoing this morning is expected to continue racing east-northeast across Iowa toward Illinois, bringing a significant threat for destructive winds and tornadoes.

As the atmosphere recovers behind the morning storms, additional severe thunderstorms are expected to redevelop later this afternoon and evening. These storms may quickly become supercells capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes before evolving into another large storm complex tonight.

A significant severe weather event is expected across portions of the Midwest and Upper Mississippi Valley today and tonight.

⚠️ Enhanced Risk areas include parts of:

Storms developing this afternoon and evening may produce:

🌪️ Strong tornadoes (EF2+ possible)
🧊 Very large hail over 2 inches in diameter
💨 Destructive winds exceeding 75 mph
⚡ Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms

Forecasters are concerned that storms may organize into a powerful MCS (Mesoscale Convective System), capable of producing widespread damaging winds while maintaining a tornado threat across portions of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The threat may begin as discrete supercells capable of producing large hail and tornadoes before transitioning into a fast-moving line of severe storms later in the day.

🌩️ Additional severe storms are possible farther south from Kansas into Oklahoma and Texas, with large hail and damaging winds being the primary concerns.

Storms are expected to develop along the Front Range this afternoon before moving east into the Plains this evening. Supercells capable of producing tornadoes, giant hail, and damaging winds will be possible before storms potentially organize into a larger wind-producing system overnight.

This is the same storm that produced the tornado near Greenwood earlier tonight.
