It is National Florida Day!! I may be about to move away from this state that I was born in, and yes there are a lot of things to hate about living here (hello, nearly endless high humidity days, mosquitos, hurricanes, and over-population). BUT there is also SO much to love and there is no doubt I will miss it. Stunning sunrises and sunsets, countless springs, amazing state parks, beautiful beaches, a variety of wildlife, and the country's oldest established city are just some of the things that make Florida special and dear to my heart 💚🌞💚

Have you ever been to King' Landing in Apopka Florida? It's just down the street from Kelly Park/Rock Springs, and they offer kayak and SUP rentals for adventure on the water. You can choose to either do a guided tour, a four hour paddle out & back self guided tour, OR for the truly adventurous soul, you can do their shuttle run. This consists of launching at King's Landing, paddling 8.5 miles (thankfully, with the current), and ending up at Wekiva Island, where you can take a shuttle bus back to King's Landing. My family joined me for this on my birthday awhile back, and it was quite the experience! Not gonna lie, we had very little previous paddling experience, and we were ill- prepared as far as snacks/bug spray/sunscreen and water is concerned. It was a struggle at times, but definitely one of those memories we can laugh at now 😆 💚🌞💚

This brightly colored, cartoonish-looking bird is a Roseate Spoonbill. Like flamingos, they get their pink color from a special pigment found in the crustaceans they eat. There are six species of spoonbills in the world, and the Roseate is the only one that is found in the Americas.

Sometimes I'm too busy looking up for birds that I almost forget to look down for snakes! I came close to stepping on this cute little corn snake that was lying right across the trail, maybe digesting a meal. 🐍

Where are my reptile people at? 🙋‍♀️ Another thing I'll miss about Florida is all the lizards running around. I used to play with them as a kid, and my dad likes to tell me about how one time he thought I accidently killed a lizard and I told him no, he's just sleeping. I remember I had been petting it and playing it music from my little Fisher Price radio lol. He didn't believe me, but when he went to sweep it away, it jumped up and ran off! Of course that was a brown anole, the invasive species that you see the most of. This photo I believe is of a fence lizard, but waiting for confirmation from the app.
