I found a small female Phidippus audax outside yesterday, 07OCT2026. Because they are so common, I don't always stop to take a photo when I see one. This picture reminds me that maybe I need to start taking more P. audax photos. She's very cute and fuzzy 😊 Sturgis, Michigan USA.

I'm pretty sure this is an Elusive Clubtail dragonfly (Stylurus notatus) I found in Elkhart, Indiana USA on 08AUG2026. Dragonflies are not always easy to photograph because they're usually pretty skittish and tend to fly away when you get close. This one was kind to me and stayed put long enough to get a couple pictures.

Here's a large female Neoscona crucifera, cross orbweaver, who lives under the window overhang on the north side of the house here in Sturgis, Michigan USA. She's pretty large but not gigantic, and she only gave me a view of her ventral side, but that did allow me to see the two matching pairs of dashes that make identification easy. I'll see if I can't get more photos of her before the fall temperatures take her away. 06OCT2026.

Not a spider! I think this is a Penitent Underwing Moth (Catocala piatrix). I didn't get any photos of the hindwings for further confirmation; I try not to disturb the subjects of my pictures. So many of the Underwing moths look so similar to each other! I see an upside-down Batman head in the middle, though 😅 You might need to flip the photo to see it. Sturgis, Michigan USA on 24SEP2026.

Not a spider! I found a mating pair of wheel bugs (Arilus cristatus) on a fence post in Coldwater, Michigan USA today, 28SEP2026. The male is much smaller than the female, but when you consider the females can be up to 1.5 inches, they're both formidable apex predators in the world of arthropods.

I haven't posted in a while because my camera was having issues with its internal WiFi, which meant I couldn't connect my tablet to my camera to download photos. For some reason, it started behaving again today. Anyway, this is a female Oxyopes salticus, striped lynx spider on the side of the house here in Sturgis, Michigan USA. You can see the distinctive dot and dash marks on her cheeks, as well as the heartmark on her opisthosoma. 14SEP2026.

Not a spider! I have very little experience identifying grasshoppers, but this is a grasshopper who was at my house on 03SEP2026. We're going to leave the ID at that. Sturgis, Michigan USA.

Ventral view of a huge female European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) the house of Jody Klaver and my Dad off their back deck. She had built a gigantic web and was facing away from me when this photo was taken. She scurried under the deck railing right after this photo was taken. Grand Ledge, Michigan USA on 06SEP2026.
