Have you ever thought about how many conversations we have in a week?

We talk about work, family, weekend plans, the weather, what to make for dinner, and whether or not we really need that thing we just added to an online cart. ๐Ÿคช

Most of those conversations are useful. Some are even fun.

Maybe someone shares a perspective you hadn't considered before or puts words to something you've been feeling but couldn't quite explain. Maybe you walk away thinking about it for days afterward.

Life is busy, and most of us are moving from one thing to the next so quickly that we rarely slow down long enough to explore the bigger questions. The ones about who we're becoming, what matters to us, what we're learning, or what we might need more of in our lives.

I think that's one of the reasons I love books so much.

Sometimes the best part isn't even the book itself but the conversations that happen because of it.

A few years ago, if someone had told me that tracing my hand on a piece of paper could help calm my mind, I probably would have laughed. It sounds almost too simple.

But sometimes the simplest things are exactly what we need.

The next time you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or like your brain is spinning with too many thoughts, place your hand on a piece of paper and slowly trace around it with a pen.

โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ As your pen travels up each finger, take a slow breath in.
โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ As your pen travels down the other side, breathe out.

That's it! No artistic talent or special supplies required. The great thing is you can do it anywhere.

What I love about this exercise is that it gives your busy brain a job. Your eyes follow the line, your hand moves, and your breathing has a rhythm. Instead of replaying the same thoughts over and over, your attention comes back to what's right in front of you.

Researchers and therapists often use techniques like this because they engage multiple senses at the same time. You're seeing, feeling, moving, and breathing. All of those things help anchor you in the present moment.

If you're someone who tends to worry about tomorrow's appointment, replays yesterday's conversation, or tries to solve next month's problems before lunch, grab a piece of paper and give it a try. It might surprise you how quickly something so simple can help you feel a little more grounded.

Summer always seems to arrive with good intentions.

We picture ourselves sitting on the deck with a book, taking evening walks, spending more time outside, and making memories with the people we love.

Then June shows up, and somehow we're busier than ever. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

One thing I've learned over the years is that the memories we treasure later are rarely the big things. They're usually the small moments like making cookies with Grandma, discovering something new together, or laughing because neither one of you knows what you're doing (that's one of my favorites! ๐Ÿ˜‚).

That's why I decided to encourage you to ๐›๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ง ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ง (late elementary school and up) along to my Summer Sunshine Zentangle class.

You don't have to bring someone, of course. Come and take some time just for yourself.

But if you've been looking for a simple way to spend a couple of creative hours together, this might be it.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that many women (including myself) become incredibly good at taking care of everyone around them.

We remember birthdays, appointments, school events, doctor visits, grocery lists, family schedules, and somehow still know exactly where that one missing thing is that everyone else swears they can't find.

What surprises me is how often we carry all of that without talking about it. We chat about work, the weather, our kids, our pets, home projects, vacations, and the latest thing we found at Costco. But the conversations that really make us feel connected? Those seem a little harder to come by.

Maybe that's why I treasure the moments when a conversation moves beyond the usual surface stuff. When someone shares something honest, and another person immediately says, "๐Ž๐ก ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ ๐จ๐ฌ๐ก, ๐ฆ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ๐จ."

There's something comforting about realizing you're not the only one trying to figure things out as you go.

While we don't need all the answers, we need a little more space for real conversations, a little more laughter, and a few more reminders that we're all wonderfully human.

Apparently, Iโ€™m not a quitter.

After last weekโ€™s butterfly adventure, I decided to give the leaf-printing thing another try. This time I picked up two leaves during my walk and thought, โ€œLetโ€™s make a flower.

The answer, as it turns out, is: the exact same thing.

Same mess. ๐Ÿคช

I went looking for the original video because I was convinced I must have missed something. Unfortunately, I have no idea where I saw it. Also, if Iโ€™m being honest, thereโ€™s a very good chance I missed an important instruction while thinking, โ€œYeah, I got it.โ€

Iโ€™m much better at figuring things out as I go than at following directions. In this case, though, I should have paid attention.

The good news is that I like this one better than the butterfly. Once I stopped trying to make it look like the tutorial and started working with what was actually on the paper, it became a lot more fun. A few lines here, a few dots there, and suddenly it felt less like a failed experiment.

Funny how often that happens in life.

The moment we stop comparing our progress to someone elseโ€™s version of how things are supposed to look, we can finally appreciate what we created ourselves.

For now, I think Iโ€™m done with leaf printing. Then again, that's exactly what I said after the butterfly. ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ˜

One of my favorite things about teaching Zentangleยฎ is watching adults rediscover something they once knew as children.

Kids don't usually sit down with a piece of paper and think, "๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐Ÿ ๐ˆ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฎ๐ฉ?"

They draw, they experiment, and follow their curiosity.

With growing responsibilities as we grew up, many of us traded that freedom for perfectionism.

That's one reason I'm really excited about my next beginner class, Summer Sunshine. โ˜€๏ธ

This time, you're welcome to ๐›๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ (late elementary age and up) and create together. It's not required, of course, but I love the idea of sharing an experience where nobody has to be "good at art." We simply start with a few lines and see where they lead.
