About Callie

Callie Griffiths is an American multi media artist. Born in Monterey California and raised in Newport R.I. Callie divides her time between the two coasts, each unique in its inspiration. Growing up in Newport she developed the talents that would define her art. These included drawing, painting and mixed media art, which would lead to an interest in filmmaking culminating in her documentary about Dorthea Lynde Dix taking first place in the Newport School District’s History day film contest. Callie also developed a talent for design, winning a statewide T-Shirt design contest for a charitable foundation. Her love of art led her to the historic Newport Art Museum where she worked for many years, teaching art to children there and at the prestigious Baily’s Beach Club on Ocean Drive.

After graduating form Roger’s High School Callie went on to the University of Rhode Island where she studied film media, producing several experimental films unique in their style and message. Her 16mm films showcased a brutally honest narrative style while her documentary “Livin Lavish Lani” about a gritty urban artist/designer garnered much critical acclaim from the university’s faculty and student body. While in college Callie expanded her creative reach, acting in, as well as writing and directing several short films. Her themes of alienation, spirituality, mental illness and the human condition struck a chord with not only her peer group but with many diverse groups and generations of people.

Her love of music led to an empathetic style of interview, which set her subjects at ease, allowing for their inner self to shine through. Her experience grew to include interviewing artists, musicians and other filmmakers. Her interviews tend to reflect the true soul of her subjects, a quality shared with her portrait painting.

Moody, experimental and open to anything, Callie’s non-judgmental, authentic and conscientious style of art is a breath of fresh air in a culture of conformity, mediocrity and complacency.
